DSLPipe DSL modem

Could the fact that I have this old SDSL modem with my ADSL connection be why I get slower download speeds than my friends who have the same ISP but newer ADSL modems (one of them even lives out in the country and I live pretty close to the inner part of the city)? I plan on calling the ISP and asking them to give me the same modem as them, the Speedstream 5200 made by Efficient Networks.

Why not? Did I mention this modem also functions as a router, if that means anything. If it only supports an SDSL connection, and my connection is ADSL with upload being considerably slower than download, wouldn't the SDSL force the download to slow down to match the upload. I know 5 people with the same ISP as me. Two have the DSLPipe and two have th Speedstream 5200. The DSLPipe ones go significantly slower. My friend has DSLPipe and usually goes around 40 kb/s constant, one of the two people with the Speedstream 5200 lives very very close to him and says he can get up to 300 kb/s and he'll get mad if he doesn't get at least 100 kb/s. Does this mean anything?

It sounds to me like you answered your own question. Ask your ISP for a new modem and if you need to go out and buy a solid router to pair it with.

Well, I'm new to this networking stuff and I don't completely know what I'm talking about. That was just my theory that I developed after reading a lot and asking people I know what kind of modems they had and the speeds they were getting. I just wanted to get confirmation.

Don't worry about it. I was the same way when I first signed up here and I still am )), but to a lesser degree.

It could be the modem but I doubt it. Do you have the same package as your friends? i.e. 1500down/384up. Line condition has a lot to do with your down/up speeds. What ISP do you have? Have the telco run a line test and see what the get.


I suggest that you go toDSLReports and see if they have your ISP listed. there is a lot of useful and valuable info there.

I tend to agree with this...the line conditions to the nearest backbone connection has everything to do with it....(also...check to see how far you and your friends are from the nearest telco switch...The closer you are to the backbone, the better off you will be...

I tried the speed test and got 2548 down and 1342 up. (318.5KB/Sec).

Dsl reports has been a life saver for me. Notr only do the have DSL forums and related stuff they also have hardware, cable, software and you name it forums.
