i do agree that DTS>DD...

but considering what the majority of the population uses to watch/listen to DVD's, it really doesn't matter...you probably won't be able to tell a noticeable difference on your sony/panasonic/sharp/rca or whatever home theather in the box system from Best Buy or Walmart...

not everyone has a high end $10k or more home theather system...just my 2 cents...

Well obviously the digital format would be the better choice...but why can't you hear anything through analog?

I have NO idea. The only DTS discs I tried were burned copies of movies that are virtually impossible to get in the U.S. (without importing at $40+ int'l shipping). My PS2 plays any region DVD. Maybe that had something to do with it? My computer played them just fine, though. Very strange.

Haven't ever noticed a problem with retail DVDs, though.

burned? single layer isn't enough for dts + dvd at any decent quality though. u mean pirate factory disc right? dts is a space hog. a dts +dd disc should damn well not have any special features on it, theres just no space. if they do then its the picture that takes ahit.

as for dts, more players support it right out of the box now. its probably cheap to add in hardware these days, just the matter of a licensing fee keeping some players from having it i bet.

DD will be mastered to sound good for the walmart masses.

DTS does not have to pander to the LDC so it can be mastered "better"

You havne't heard DVD audio or SACD then.

That really is no comparison. DTS can't even approach them.

all of my dvd players are dts capable and if i put in a movie on a dvd player that is just connected to a tv through the analog connections, no audio goes to the t.v.

as far as sound quality, 90% of the time i think dts is brighter and deeper, but if i watch a movie late at night and my wife is sleeping, then i will select dd because it seems that the frequencies in which people talk are a little higher.

so, imo, dts when i can watch and not worry about dbs, but dd if i have to worry about dbs.

I read an article a while back claiming that the DTS encoder amplifies the output by a small amount (few dB). It attributed the "better" sound to simply being "louder", much like the mastering that goes on with most CDs today.

The Star Wars DVDs dont offer DTS, but do show that a proper DD mix will not leave you wanting more.

Except the new one. The mastering is horrible.
Visit any Home Theater site to read about it.

I did not think it was too terrible, but compared to the previous 2, it is no where near as good.
