Dual 2011 vs dual 1366 setup: video rendering

I have a dual 2011 (2650L V1. 8 cores@1.8ghz) on its way. I got the setup for around $400 be including 64GB RAM.

but I have an opportunity to buy a dual 1366 setup (E5645 6 cores@2.4ghz) for less $100. This includes 48GB RAM.

Is there a significant performance advantage of the 2011 setup? I know that the newer CPU has AVX which might help.

I've looked at comparisons but nothing really specific to video rendering. Thanks

Well, the 2650L is Sandy Bridge EP while the E5645 is Westmere EP.

So if you go back to the original Anandtech review of Sandy Bridge, you can look at the tests and see a a comparison of the two architectures.

All other things being equal, it looks like SB is 23% faster, per-core/per-GHz. Multiplying that out (8x1.8x1.23 vs. 6*2.4), if your application/renderer has close-to-perfect multi-CPU scaling, then you should see a 23% advantage to the newer hardware. The less well the scaling works, the less of an advantage you'll be likely to see.

IMO a 20% speed boost is probably worth the $100. Heck, the additional RAM is probably worth $100 by itself.
