I'm thinking of creating 2 partions and installing a copy of XP Home on each. The first XP is for everyday use and the second one is for installing beta software, demo games, demo utilities and basically junk software. Is this a good idea?
i dont see a problem if you have enough space......i ran linux and xp home for awhile just to learn it.......you can always erase a partition if you dont like it
sure this should work just fine for you, when you boot off the cd for the second install just specify the unpartitioned space and it should be able to create a new partition, format it, and setup the boot menu for you.
And of course this is a good idea, I've got a crashbox in my office that I use to test software with Windows 98, 2000 Pro, XP Home, and XP Pro.
right-click on "my computer" select "manage"
expand storage, go to "disk management"
locate the partition you wish to remove and right-click>delete partition
VMWare makes more sense for this, you can even take a snapshot, install the software then rollback the snapshot so you're sure you're in a clean state.
I've done it before. I had a 3gb second partition for benchmarking only...that kind of crazy benchmarking the folks over Futuremark do (lots of hardware disabled, tweaks, lowered image quality, risky settings). I think it's a great idea if you want to have a "It's ok for me to screw this installation up" partition. I did end up killing my 2nd partition a couple times from the risky settings and stuff, so I'd say it's worth it.
