I have formated a hard drive and it still asked me what operating system I want. I can't figure out how to get rid of this. I am using Win2K and Windows wants to know if I want Win XP. I do not have winxp on the drive.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

well do you have multiple hard disks?
if yes if you have formatted your slave drive the master will still have a the boot value for directing the boot process to your slave?

Yes I have 2 hard drives. I have not formated the 2nd drive. Boot drive is a Raptor 36g the 2nd is a WD 80gig on an ide.

So if I understand you...by formating the 2nd drive this will eliminate the problem? Should I set the second drive to a slave?

Thanks for the help

No. Don't format or change anything.

Post your boot.ini file, found in the root of your C: drive. You may need to turn on the show-hidden-files option.

Boot from the XP CD and select the Recovery Console. Login to the installation and then type 'fixmbr'. On W2K I think it's very similar except you choose to restore boot files or Master Boot Record. You could also boot a Win98 floppy and type fdisk /mbr.

In other words, you turn on your PC, and you almost immediately get an option to load either Win2k or WinXP, and so you choose Win2k, and it loads great. Right? If so, you need to show hidden files and look at the boot.ini file and remove the WinXP entry.

In addition to showing hidden files you need to also be sure to clear that checkbox that says "Hide protected operating system files."
