Hello, PC Enthusiasts;

I have an 850W PSU liquid cooled chassis, and I have been looking into a dual card GPU upgrade. Most video cards that I have looked at are listing 250w for their power consumption. If the required power supply is 400w above the amount—pretty much all of them ask for 650w, with 350w above the dual cards' power consumption (250w X 2 = 500w), wouldn't the computer stay operational most of the time? The second card won't be in full throttle mode most of the time anyway...

Would you think this move is worth a try?

I don't really understand what you're asking...

While you have to factor in ALL of the computer's hardware power requirements, and power supply design, I don't see why your PSU wouldn't work--if you're really that bent on using two GPU's (in which you didn't specify model)

I"m looking at PNY GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB Blower. It'd be nice if I can work it out. A lot of power users seem to think that PSU is one area that we don't want to skimp...

A quality 850W may work, but what model do you have and how old is it? Also what is your CPU and other hardware?

That'd be really nice, Shmee.

MODEL
Alienware Aurora R6 Base
2017

CPU
Intel Core i7-7700K Processor (4-Cores, 8MB Cache, Turbo Boost 2.0, Overclocked up to 4.4GHz on all four cores)

PSU
850W Liquid Cooled Chassis
Its model number is 13p1-4yuoc12, but I couldn’t get any meaningful data through system scanning.

MEMORY
64GB (4X16GB) DDR4-2666 / PC4-21300

SSD
PC300 NVMe SK hynix 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD
Samsung SSD 850 PRO 2TB Serial ATA 6Gb/s @ 6Gb/s
Samsung SSD 850 PRO 1TB Serial ATA 6Gb/s @ 6Gb/s

Video Cards that I’m looking at
PNY GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB Blower
I have checked physically it will fit, including 4 8-pin cables, so the missing puzzle is the power supply for 2 of these.

INTENDED USAGE
I am not a gamer. The most intensive activity will be 3D modeling in Maya, and there won't be any overclocking.

I'd appreciate it if you can share your insight.

A bit of digging suggests that a 2080 Ti can draw just shy of 300w max. A rough guess at the rest of the build is 200-250w. That puts you just under your 850w rating. Making the plausible assumption that you won't be maxing out both GPU's AND the CPU AND all your SSD's simultaneously, I think you're OK with 850w as long as it actually delivers at or near that rating, and I guess that's something of an unknown.
