dual core athlon 64 fx

just saw this, and didn't find anything on it in a search

amd roadmap

it says at the bottom that the first dual core fx will be out Q4 2005, on socket 900, and use ddr II 667

this is the first i've seen of amd announcing they will use ddrII, as well as a new socket. from what i'd previously heard the dual cores would remain on 939.

it also looks like the 4000 will be the only 1 MB L2cahce processor we see without the fx name, as they will make the successive improvements on the winchester core(up to 3 GHz, 4400)

also, the fx 57 is scheduled for Q1 and the 59 for Q2 at 3 GHz so it looks like amd is confident in their ability to scale up to 3 GHz quickly

Late 2005 DDR2 support on the A64 is still rumor although inferred. Officially AMD hasn't announced DDR2 support (datewise) & AFAIK they said they'll support it when it makes sense to do so.

The year has 4 quarters...January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December...

why not? less pins to have a possibility to be bent. The amount of pins has little to do with anything. In fact, on intel prescotts, 70% of all the pins are for power and not data at all.

to distinguish between ddr and ddrII platforms probably. i don't think less pins have less chance of being bent, more pins will help support any force spread out over more pins.

i guess amd will support ddrII cause they will need the extra bandwidth for dual cores

DDR2 is the way to get faster ram, however it isn't benneficial right now due to high latencies. However once DDR2 matures and gets faster the switch over is an obvious no brainer.
