Dual Core Crashing?

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 400 dual core Intel machine and a copy of Star Wars Battlefield II arrived under my tree. My initial reaction was of course "yee ha!", but that feeling quickly turned to "oh crap".

BFII crashes constantly, particularly during certain scenarios like space flight/combat sequences. The issue is all over the lucas arts forums, and clearly Lucas Arts is pointing the finger at Intel, AMD, and PC makers. The problems seem to be on both AMD and Intel CPUs. I'll admit I started reading the threads with a growing dread about the new machine I have.

Is this an abbreation? Is this Lucas just pointing the finger anywhere but at itself? Your thoughts and opinions would be great to hear. I'm not looking for tech support. I'm curious if people have seen similar problems with other games.

My XPS box is basicly straight from the factory - WinXP, 1 GB RAM, SATA srives, Nvivia 6800 card...it runs everything else ok, but BFII is pretty much the only "high-end game" I have.

Have you tried setting affinity to a single core? That might help, I'd guess...

yes - and no that does not help.

There are a bunch of suggested solutions: setting affinity mode; setting compatibility mode; turning off sound; etc. These seem to work sporadically for people, btu not consistently.

Do you mean Star Wars Battlefield II or Star Wars Battlefront II?

I have Battlefront II, and it works perfectly. I've never had a crash, through hours and hours of playing.

Although, I don't think my CPU counts, since it is only 2 logical cores and not 2 real cores.

I have the same problem with Battlefield 2. I have a 4800 dual. I checked the Lucas Arts forums and many others running dual core have the same problem. Game lockups and crashes. No fix yet that I know of.

No problems with Battlefield 2 on my dual core system which is a miracle considering how many problems people were having with it. I think you're talking about Battlefront II, which is a different game.

Battlefield 2
Battlefront II

Its just LucasArts totally CRAPPY coding , they have issues all the time, they should be giving themselves uppercuts ! Try deleteing the folder in documents+settings. Short of that use the disc as a frisby !
