Would a dual core outperform a single core in game performance if both cores were to be fully utilized in games?

Theoretically, dual core CPUs will not provide any increase in today?s single threaded games. However, in the future, games are supposed to begin utilizing multiple cores (like Unreal Engine 3)

If both cores were FULLY utilized, then the dual core cpu would be almost 2x as fast as a single core cpu at the same clock speed. This is excluding all other possible bottleneck, of course.

Assuming you have a CPU dependant game (ie. gfx cards dont make much impact on FPS), then you could see a massive difference once they are multi-threaded.

by the time games are mult-threaded, the X2 will be obsolete. Dont waste your money on a dual core for a gaming rig.

If you want to burn 500$ ill give you my paypal account.

UT2007 will be multi threaded(supposedly) and come out next year. The current X2 cpus will not be the top end cpus by then, but they will be far from obsolete. I believe AMD is planning only one speed bump that entire year for the X2 series(5000+??)

i got rid of my fx-55 and got a 4400x2 and have never been happier. my 4400x2 is overclocked to 2610 and is smoking fast. all the speed of a fx-55 with an another core to spare. you do the math. = stomps the 55 in day to day use. i highly reccomend the x2 to anyone who is looking for a new cpu.

how many multi threaded games are there? only the usual suspects huh. And what do u think will happen to the S939 X2 line, when AMD is introducing Socket M2 in early 2006? Ull be very pleased to see a 5200+? I bet not if they offer u a 5400+ M2 Time to upgrade again.
And sure, X2 are the best upgrade and multi-tasking-dream machine and whatever u want, but: they are overpriced, they need games software support (smp games wont pop out of the ground like mushrooms, this will take years), and if ur a gamer and this means u dont care about the possibility of encoding dvds, using CAD, and have a league play all at the same time cuz all u can do with ur lil gamer brain i shooting them terrorist, see if thats the case than why bother and buy a overpriced duallie that cant give u a performance increase in any game, except maybe if u play two games at the same time? My advice to a true gamer would be: buy a fair cost/performance SC CPU for 250 and some decent cooling and maybe oc it. X2 are great and all but for a single appz gamer its wasted money.

who cares about socket M2 now.. or when its released...

If I was to purchase an X2, 4000+ now for my S939 platform, this would be a reliable system for a minimum of three years... by that time, then I'll worry about what new socket is out on the market..

I submit that having two cores is FAR more important than just a pathetic 200Mhz/400Mhz speed increase.

I would like to see game benchmarks when computer is also running Firewall and antivirus (not scanning HDD, just in the background).
