DEFINITELY install the AMD X2 driver as well as the Microsoft Hotfix and then the apropriate registry entry!

Agreed, saves lots of hassle and solves affinity problem in games not supporting dual core

I noticed at this page it says the hotfix is for systems with cool & quiet enabled. I never turned that one, was I supposed to? Also does it matter which order I install these in?

Funny thing.........I needed and installed both "patches" on my X2 3800+ and it helped. A month or less ago I bought a new X2 4400+ and never installed either patch........no problems with anything whatsoever, both on A8N-E boards and both with 2GB's of Mushkin extreme........

unless you installed your new X2 on a newly formatted drive.....both of the patches are still in effect even if you replaced your cpu...

actually, IIRC, there was a couple threads about if it was only for CnQ, but it turns out the hotfix isn't ONLY for the CnQ....but if your not noticing any problems, you won't need the hotfix, only the amd driver

I'm currently using both.

Wasn't clear............this was a completely redone system including format/installation of XP Pro/XP 64 bit and Vista beta 5308 (yes, I am a MS beta tester and it is a legit install). I've actually discussed this on other forums (ProOne) and we're wondering if the newer cores may have something to do with this because I'm not the only one to have noticed this................

I would definatly install the X2 drivers, but don't bother with the hotfix unless you run in to a problem that it's suppose to fix. I've had 0 problems with my X2 with just the AMD driver, so I didn't bother with the hotfix.

Both of these facilitate the function of CnQ.

From the AMD Utility page:
Allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination that match the instantaneous user performance need. Download this Setup Installation program (EXE) to automatically update all the files necessary for installation. This package is recommended for users whom desire a graphical user interface for installation. This .EXE driver is a user friendly localized software installation of the driver designed for end-users. This driver supports AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processors on Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SP1.

They certainly won't hurt if you're not using CnQ but personally I don't use them and I have no problems with my dual core system.

as i said earlier, there has been countless posts stating that it is NOT only for cnq...it basically fixes the issue of setting affinity to 1 core in games....

My questions is: If you install the exe hotfix do you have to still do the registry fix?

Thanks,
Jared

Yes, because the hotfix is not applied until you do the registry fix...note: as stated by Microsoft, BE CAREFUL when doing the registry fix...do it wrong and it can screw up your OS, losing everything...if you're backed up then it wont be a problem, but just a precaution. But the steps are very easy to follow, so you're a moron if you screw it up

Again, what registry fix are we talking about? The only thing about the registry here http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=896256 is how to disable the new policy.

Am I misunderstanding something?
