I did find that you can cut down some of the noise by attaching a square piece of notecard in the back on the top and bottome making a "c" shape.

Try buying a quiet 80mm fan and positioning it(via tape & cardboard, or whatever you want to use) so that half of it blows into/out of the enclosure. You will get half of an 80mm's airflow at very little noise. Were you to get equivelent airflow out of a 40mm fan(or whatever this thing uses) it would have to sound like a rather loud power tool(I would say jet engine, but they don't have as much painful high frequency as high-powered small fans have).

Alternatively, look at something like this.

Thanks for the info Squalish. The fan is the same size as this fan (minus the cpu clip and different adaptor). Can you add resistors to it to slow it down or will you burn it out by doing that? I know that you can undervolt 80mm fans fairly easily but could you do something similar to a fan like this? Putting an external fan blowing in is a good idea but it does make it a little more difficult to move around. I do think the small, high-speed fan on this device is overkill for the amount of noise it creates. Would there be any danger running a 5400rpm HD or burner in it with the fan disconnected?

Wow, I thought these were expensive locally at $54 each! I guess I'll go ahead and pick on up tomorrow to put my new 4x DVD-RW drive in.

Dual interface for $54? Where at?
Also I've read on other forums where some people are having problems copying DVDs (picture doesn't look as good as original) from an external enclosure.

don't see why not, who makes your USB2.0 burner?

But if you want a 3.5" enclosure - all they have are separate USB 2.0 and Firewire enclosures.

BTW - these aren't "Geek Specials" so the easily found 10% off promo codes should work.

Does anyone know how much smaller the ME-720 ones are from the ME-320 ones? The ME-720 are only for 3.5" yet they look just as big as the ME-320 enclosures.

I have a Cendyne/Pioneer 105 installed in a ME-320F (firewire only) and it works without problems.

One thing I would advise for users running Win98SE is to update the 1394 driver at the windows update site (search for "1394"), this helped a lot for my machines recognizing the drive more quickly.

I am happy with the spead and ease of connection, but the fan is a little noisy. I was able to make is significantly quieter by cutting out the stamped fan guard which increases the turbulence. I was planning to get a wire grill, but have not found one yet...

hi all,

well I bought that usb 2.0 enclosure. It works great with my Maxtor hard drive. Take awhile to do anything b/c my PC have usb 1.1. That sucks. From what I understand usb 2.0 is even faster then firewire.

Anyway, for anyone want pci card usb 2.0 here is the Link. And they are having a special that I believe will save U $1. There is the other $15 one, but I don't see the different. Let me know what U guy think.

O, and the one DestruyaUR talking about, I think that support both usb and firewire.

doesn't support 200GB drives.

the only external enclosure i've found that does is from this site
PCMicroStore

It's $39, USB 2.0, looks alright, and supports 200Gb drives. I haven't ordered it because they have only one resellerrating. Which was someone saying they didn't order from the site because the BBB has them listed as bad juju. I see this site advertised on gotapex all the time...anyone have any experience with them, or this enclosure?

Got the 5.25/3.5 USB 2.0 version a few weeks ago. Works great in XP with a hard drive since it recognizes it as a mass storage device (not removable storage). Speed (for USB2.0) is almost as fast as internal.

Got it today and love it.
Took my CD-RW out of the external Firewire enclosure put it into this baby, hooked it up and voila ... I'm burning CDs!

Although they had a problem with my order at first (their order form is horrible!!!) the shipping was FAST!!! Although I ordered via 3-day UPS it was shipped yesterday and arrived today (LA, CA)!

Got mine yesterday, works great!

Put in a 80GB HD and it transfers much faster than what I anticipated (copied 1GB in under 1min w/ Firewire).

I bought one of these a month back but I paid $78. It is loud to a point.

Has anyone had any problems hooking it up to a Sony Vaio laptop firewire port? I can't get it to recognize it.

QUIET HOW TO:
I got mine finally to quiet down, way down. I accomplished this through some basic rewiring. I picked up a small fan controller online for about $8. CompUSA has them at http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product%5Fcode=298563&csearch=&cmid=&pfp=srch1. I had to do some splicing but what I basically did was run the fan wires outside of the case through the little controller and back into the case to the power supply. I tried running it without any cooling but the power supply just seemed to heat up too much for my tastes. I velcroed the fan controller to the outside in case I ever have to take it off.

My external case is now whisper quiet because you can dial it down to a point where you no longer hear it. I really like it because it is so small and unobtrusive. You will be much happier when you can't hear it anymore.
