Hi,

My card has 3 outputs HDMI, DVI-D and VGA
I wan to connect 2 monitors 1920x1200 in extended mode

By reading the forum this is my understanding, please correct me if I am wrong:

A splitter cable only gives you the same output on both (non extended), basically there is no way to use it in extended mode with the single output from the PC.

One solution is DVI-D PC to DVI monitor, VGA to DVI adapter to DVI input on monitor
--> question is this the same as using a VGA cable from PC to VGA input monitor (from the quality of the display?)

The only way to get extended mode with DVI is to ger a video card with to DVI outputs , correct?

thank you

I think you can get extended mode with any two of those three outputs. So if you use the DVI-D as one output, you can connect the second monitor to the HDMI or VGA and get dual monitor extended mode with DVI.

Would the quality of the HDMI be better than the VGA ?

thanks

Hdmi would be better, but if you already have a monitor without Hdmi, a cheap Hdmi to FBI adapter will do fine.

I think 1920x1200 is within spec for a single link passive adapter ($5) if you aren't doing 3D. Correct me if I'm wrong. (I know somebody will, lol)

HDMI quality is potentially better than VGA, but my own experiments show me that I cannot tell the difference when I switch my own monitor between different inputs. I guess a benefit to HDMI and DVI is that you don't need to "adjust" the monitor buttons for getting the timing/centering etc. just right, because HDMI and DVI will just work.

In fact, your monitor will usually have an "Auto" adjust button that works when you use a VGA cable, where the monitor tries to look its best. Usually, I find the "auto" adjustment on a VGA signal looks just as good as a DVI or HDMI signal. Also notice that when you use the DVI or HDMI port and press the Auto adjust button on the monitor, the monitor should tell you that the auto function is disabled - because DVI/HDMI just looks as good as it can all the time without worrying about needing to auto adjust anything.

Thank you all for the replies.

One more question:

Would it be any difference in Display quality in these scenarios:
1- PC VGA out -->VGA cable--> Monitor VGA In
2- PC VGA out -->VGA to DVI adapter--> DVI cable --> Monitor DVI In
3- PC VGA out --> VGA cable --> VGA to DVI adapter --> Monitor DVI In

thanks again

If you are looking to go from VGA to DVI you are planning to go from analog to digital. You can't buy cheap adapters. You would need an active converter that goes from VGA in to DVI-D out. I would recommend checking out KVMSwitchTech. They have an active converter that goes from VGA to DVI-D. It has a VGA input and both VGA and DVI-D output. (Part # SCA-ANA-DVI)
