I read somewhere that it is possible to set up two monitors when using graphics programs like photoshop. This way you can have your image full screen on one monitor and all your palettes on the other. Does anyone have any information on how to set this up properly? I'm running 98 Se is it possible for this OS?

It's easy to stretch Windows programs over 2 monitors. Even if Photoshop doesn't have some special feature for using multi-monitors, you can stretch it over both monitors and put the image on one screen and the tools on the other.

I have just 'heard' this, cannot confirm.

I understand what you are talking about, have photoshop in one screen, and the actucal image on the other screen.
it's built into photoshop on the Mac platform, you may need a plugin for PC

<< But what do I need two video cards? Or are there cards w/ two outputs? >>

ATI and Matrox makes dual head cards that have superb 2d. I personally run a ATI 8500 Radeon on two Sony F 500 monitors. Running duals makes working in Photoshop and Illustrator more productive.

I have been running Dual monitors on a matrox G400, and not G550 for nearly 2 1/2 years.... works great.... easy to do, just install two monitors, on each of the dual head connectors on the back of the graphics card, and enable the dual monitors in the display properties... Doesn't get much easier... and I love the extra desktop real estate.

re 2 monitors:

windows 98 will support up to 9 monitors.

rule of thumb: you need an additional video card for each additional monitor although there are some high-dollar video cards which have 2 outputs. you may have to add ram, too.

check out "help" in your windows start menu. type in "multiple monitors" under the search tab.

check out http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/guide/

i am running 2 monitors. cost: $40 for brand-new 8mb pci video card, $200 for used 21-inch monitor, $20 for generic 128mb ram. be sure to consult your system manufactuer's documentation and website before choosing add-on components.

i do not run any special software such as ultramon or powerstrip, but the registry edit tip under "desktop icons move to primary monitor after reboot" on the realtime soft website was invaluable.

note: make sure your anti-virus software is shut down before installing new video drivers. with norton you have to go into the options screen. this cost me lots of frustration and a long-distance phone call to canada.

caution, a multiple monitor setup is just like a boat or a car or any other machine. i have a 2-monitor setup, but i wish i had 3...

good luck

It's possible to have even more monitors. My friend just bought 3 cheap PCI video cards and setup a triple monitor system for his dad. He uses this from stock trading. It's really cool. He calls it the command center. The Radeon VE is a really excellent value though. It only costs around $50-$60 shipped. Both RAMDACs are high quality as well.

I do PS 5.5 with two Tubes and two cards (AGP/PCI) My primary card is an Elsa GeForce2MX 32MB AGP and my PCI card is an ATI XPERT128 16MB PCI

In Win2K I have the monitors setup for independent resolutions but I run them the same 1280x1024 each. I can drag pallets around anywere I want. No plugin required.

have fun
