Dual purpose external drive?

Is it possible to have a drive physically connected to an Xbox One via USB AND a wired LAN connection as a home backup/cloud system?

I don't think so, but I might be wrong.

Besides, you might not want to regardless. External drives on the XB1 are used in one of two ways. The first way is that the system formats it as system expansion for game installs. The second way is that it simply mounts the drive as any other NTFS drive and lets you play media files off of it; however, you can't then use it to install games.

If you plan to use it for game installs, then your question is moot, so I'm thinking you want to be able to read media off of it due to a lack of a DLNA server yet also share that media over the network. Unfortunately, I think you might be better off just getting another drive just for the XB1 if that's the case.

Hopefully that's helps some.

I would also assume not. It says on Microsoft's site that when you connect an external drive to the Xbox One, it "prepares it for use," or something. I assume that means it'll format it, and it does it in its entirety. I don't know that you can create a pair of partitions, on e the Xbox One can't see or touch, to get it to serve as a dual-purpose drive. On top of that, connecting it via USB and Ethernet at the same time? I imagine that SOMETHING would get mad.

What intrigues me is whether or not the Xbox One could read a properly formatted NAS drive, like a MyCloud or something. I doubt it, but it would be cool if the Xbox One could grab that stuff. You could then have multiple Xbox One consoles in the house, connect them to the formatted drive wirelessly, and have them share it. That's what they should work on.

I believe, at least this was how it was with the 360, there are two uses of external drives on the Xbox. One is a NTFS formatted drive used entirely for data and the other is the Xbox specific formatted drive used for system data, which includes profiles and saved games.

I don't know if this specific implementation has been added to the Xbox One, as I haven't tried it myself, but it was like that on the 360.

So, having a drive connected via USB to the Xbox One and connected via ethernet (or any other means) should work if you are only using is as a media storage device, depending on how the drive handles multiple connections via it's own firmware. If you wanted to use that drive to save Xbox One related files though, it will have to be formatted to whatever the file system it uses (which is strange, due to MS having developed NTFS and it being proprietary to Windows).
