I installed a Cisco RV042 to a Cable connection and DSL line. A few issues.
FYI:
approximately 30 computers connected
1 a 24 netgear 24 port gigabit switch
and 10 port netgear gigabit switch
Firmware updated today.
There is no server on the system.

1 When In Smart link backup mode
When I set the DSL line as primary and Cables and secondary and unplug the DSL line to check if it switched everything works fine and the computers switch to cable like nothing happened.
BUT
When I set cable and Primary and DSL as secondary and I unplug the cable line, it does not switch.. nothing happens.
and worse (not all) but some of the computers will not connect back to the internet again when I plug the line back in nothing works I have to reboot the switch router and computers to get anything back online..

FYI I disconnected the line running into the providers routers.
Any Ideas? does the # of computers have anything to do with it?
does the Ip assignment by the first sp cause this?

2) when I set the systems to "load balance" the websites end up resetting after a few minuets. 99% of the traffic at this business is secure site work.
which is why I ended up switching to smart link backup. Question. If i set https to bind to wan1 and the service drops will it switch to the 2nd service? or is this only in smart backup mode? I have heard contradicting information.

Sounds like an IP conflict or a DHCP issue at first glance. Do you have static IP addresses for both the DSL and the Cable service, and are they configured correctly in the Smartlink?

Also, try testing it by pulling the power plug from the modems, *not* the data lines. This simulates an actual device failure, power outage, or service outage. Disconnecting the data line can cause all sorts of funny behavior in a failover situation.

I am not familiar with the smartlink device. However link failiure is often configured in various ways such as trying to ping an outside address or an HTTP get some where. Have you configured all of this correctly and what did you set the retry and time outs to? As for the HTTPS question, it depends on the device. Some bind to one interface and never switch, others will let you select a preferred path and switch on a link down. Load balancing also yet again varies based on the configuration. Some will load balance the internal PCs (IE each PC to 1 interface) others will try to load balance the sessions or load balance the connections to an outside IP address. I find that a lot of websites don't seem to handle session load balancing well especially if the site opens a couple of sessions and the site's internal code doesn't really expect IP address changes, which may invalidate the session.

Sorry for the brain dump, I find [cheap] dual WAN devices a PITA in a lot of cases depending on use case.

I would not recommend the Cisco RVxx series at all. I tried out an rv042 series a few years back and experienced very similar results to yours. Do yourself a favor and just pickup a sonicwall off ebay or something. Something like a TZ210. The hardware itself isn't that expensive and you don't NEED to pay for the extra licenses, which does increase the cost, unless you want the added features. Sonicwall for dual WAN works exactly like it's supposed to. On mine, it doesn't immediately switch over but after about 10-15 seconds after a failure, it'll switch, then waits until 2 min after the primary line is back up before switching back. If it detects a link failure, it switches within 5 seconds.

There is added cost for hardware that works in this manner but if your operating a business that has to be online in order to function, it's the cost of doing business. If it's too expensive then you may want to re-think why you need dual internet connections for backup in the first place.

All the units settings are set to default. I was told I need to call the service providers and turn off DHCP and set them to bridge mode. I am assuming I should do this to both? I am not sure if I need to change any other settings.
