2cpu has just posted a link on there front page to a thread in Storage Review's fourm where a guy posted that his dual XP's don't work with he's new A7M266-D. In his post he states that when he booted his computer with two XP's installed he got this message:

"AMD XP CPU detected - forcing single CPU mode"

He also says "According to Asus this is a requirement being placed on manufactures of 760MPX boards by AMD". If this is true AMD is shooting themselves in the foot. They could have sold a bunch of XP to guys and gals who wanted to run them in pairs.

Why sell a cheaper XP when AMD can make more money off of MP's? Anyways, they probably did this for future chips when and if the MP diverges from the XP. Although, I have heard that current XP's have SMP disabled. I don't think that's been verified, but I wouldn't surprised.

I've got a dual XP1600 setup on a Tyan Tiger MP - they work great, and they were cheap!

From Tyan's Tiger MPX manual:
Tiger MPX

"Your brand new Tiger MPX supports the latest processor technologies from AMD. All the latest
Athlon, Athlon MP and Athlon XP (Athlon XP in single mode only) processors can be used on this
board. However, only the following processors are certified and supported in dual
processor configuration:
Athlon MP processors up to Athlon MP 1900+ (check www.tyan.com for updates)
Duron processors, Athlon C (Thunderbird), and Athlon XP processors are only supported in single
mode and therefore only one of each processor can be installed at any given time. Also, be
careful not to mix different types of processors together as damage to your processors,
motherboard or both may occur."

Or the other way of looking at it, AMD would make more money from selling
pairs of MP chips.

Yeah selling selling MPs are always better than XPs, since the systems have 2 CPUs the premium of MPs gets multiplied by 2.

lol, that cracked me up.

If it is a limitaion on the board, and not on the cpu, I wonder if there will be a workabout for getting them to work.

I'm a littled saddened by this, but it does make sense from AMD's point of view

This is irritating. Wait for these boards, and then they do this. This is more of an Intel-like stunt if true. Perhaps someone will come up with a bios that will fix this little "problem". If not, I've waited this long... I suppose there is always Northwood.

There are people on this board who have dual xp's in the Tiger MP, ViperGTS comes to mind.

As for the A7M2660-D, it doesn't surprise me but who cares as long as one of the dual motherboards supports, or should I say the xp will work on.

For those who bought the first batch(es) of the Athlon XP's, you are lucky. It was discovered that the first batch(es) were SMP unlocked and could be used on duallies (like an MP chip). AMD corrected this and the next batches were SMP locked and therefore do not work in a multi processor enviroment.

So in a nutshell, it is not the motherboard. It is the CPU chip.

I guess it's all luck. What would happen if you ran one MP and one XP together though?

I will find the link if I can, but the MPX is what blocks the XP, the tyan tiger does, and will continue to support XPs

Cmon guys, just relax. AMD is trying to make a profit, they don't give a damn about you except to gain your loyality. Just like Intel, MS, etc.

The more I read about the MPX boards the happier I become with my Tiger MP.

I'm currently running dual TBirds, but plan to upgrade to dual XP's at 1600 or 1667 MHz.

Viper GTS <-- More power!

<< Two Athlon XPs run on 760 MPX
16:01 - Author: Nero24

In the last days the rumor arose , Main boards on base of the new AMD 760 MPX chip record the dual operation would refuse in the Web, if two TBirds were, Durons or in the special case Athlon XPs in the computer. The computer announces itself with the comment:

" AMD XP CCU detected - forcing single CCU mode "

In the last days we began to test the new Asus A7M266-D with 760 MPX chip record. Meanwhile unfortunately we had to put both Reviews (Single-Win9x, single and dual WinXP) on ice, since the current BIOS indicates 1003 problems within many areas, how they are usual for a brand-new project however. But as long as the board makes us unfortunate with a third of our notorious tests " von-Seite-10 ", it does not have to write a sense a Review over it. The good message: Asus werkelt as moves to it so that we are good courage with a new BIOS version to attack finally correctly to be able.

Which we can definitely already now say however are that the A7M266-D starts also with 2x Athlon XP without too meckern in dual operation. The XPs is as well known by AMD for the dual operation freigebenen and tested, so that it can quite occur that one gets times a copy, which does not fulfill the specifications for the dual operation. But the board generally refuses at least not dual operation thereby, detects the two XPs in the opposite even as MPs, which also no miracle is, since both PCUs on the same core structure and are not up to the inscription those too distinctive. 'all-clear' signal for amateur handicraftsmen, their XPs already had thus positioned themselves...

It isn't about making more money off people, it's about reputation. there is a reason MP cost more, they test them for duel mode and insure their stability. AMD doesnt want a bunch of ppl all over the boards complaining about system instabilities and making them look bad. i don't see what ppl are so mad about. AMD has always stated that if you want to run duellies buy MP processors.

The ppl are sore because they are so used to cheating they feel they deserve the right to do what they want when they want with what they pay for. Sort of like the same ppl who are sore for MS having Product Activation on WinXP. Don't like it don't buy it. Simple.

Yep, either pay for the MP's or get dual P4's if you're angry enough. Oh wait,
I forgot that those P4's are crippled non-SMP processors too. Oh where
will we turn?

Seems to me that the people complaining about XP's not working in MP rigs are the same kind of people who complain that they can only get a 100Mhz overclock. As if they should be guaranteed "X" amount of free megahertz.

Or even worse, "my Athlon died after I unlocked it...can I RMA it for a free replacement?"
