DualShock 3 Problem

I just got the new DualShock 3 controller today. There weren't any instruction to "pair" the it to the PS3 (I'm used to doing that with my 360), so I just plug it in to the PS3 usb port and charged it up. Afterward, I unplugged it and the PS3 recognized the new controller just fine.

However, this controller won't stop scrolling downward (like if you push and hold the down button on the D-pad). This happens in the PS3 menu and games menus. It would automatically scroll down to the bottom option. Push up, but it would go back down automatically. If I push the PS button, it would scroll down to the buttom option and then refuses to respond from any input afterward.

The D-pad looks fine and it's not stuck or anything, so I'm guessing I just got a defective unit? Such a long drive to return it to Best Buy too ><.

turn the system off and try again?
I know this was a problem in the PS1 days (maybe PS2? never had it happen then, but was more careful), where if the analog stick was pushed in any direction while the system was turning on, that position would register was the neutral position, and the center neutral position would then become the direction pushed originally, so the controller just resting there, would be registering motion.

It could be a defective unit, but try turning the system and controller off and trying again.

You didn't mention if you've turned the controller or system off, so I'm just starting at this point. If that doesn't work, it's likely defective.

I have had this problem with both of my DualShock 2s. There doesn't appear to be any analog stick dead zone at all, so even if the stick is perfectly centered, it'll often try to move in one direction or another.

Yeah, I have turned the system on and off, even reset the controller (using a pin to push in the little reset hole on the back), still the same problem.
