Duke Power confirmed today it is preparing a combined construction and operating license (COL) application for new nuclear generation. The application is for two Westinghouse Advanced Passive 1000 (AP1000) reactors at a site to be named following the conclusion of its current site selection study.

Pursuit of the COL application, which is expected to be submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission within the next 24-30 months, is part of the company?s long-term generation planning process, and will allow Duke Power to keep new nuclear generation as an option for meeting its customers? future energy needs.

?Our employees have proven that nuclear generation can provide safe, reliable and cost-effective electricity for our customers,? said Brew Barron, Duke Power chief nuclear officer. ?Preparing this application provides us the option to continue using a diverse fuel mix in the future.?

Good to see nuclear power getting started again.

Friend of mine in town here is a director at Union Gas (subsidiary of Duke) and they have been going through some rough times, you can see this in the stock price (DUK) and he said there is a hiring freeze across the whole company and the one focus right now is putting together the nuke bid in the US. They are putting a lot of time and effort into this project.

Good. Nuclear power certainly has downsides (waste disposal is a big issue), but most people protesting it seem to forget that alternatives are mostly worse in terms of negative side effects. Well, it's not so much they forget as they don't care. To them, it's not about solving the issue, it's about bitching about a solution.

I am not an expert on nuclear waste, but even after a decade of operation isn't the waste only going to be the size of a small pail?

Yeah, seeing people who usually disagree on everything, suddenly agree on something, is, well...Creepy.

Yay!
I don't live in the US, but with some luck, if this goes through, maybe it could send a signal to others as well(after all, McDonals did spread the junkfood culture, though I'd prefer nuclear power over McD ).
Nuclear power is by far the best power available in the foreseeable future.

I <3 Duke Energy and nuclear power. I hope this doesn't dimish oil demand too much though, because I <3 the oil sands in Alberta more

Iran isn't stupid. As far as I know Iran has two natural resources: Oil and Sand. Oil is going to run out and nobody wants more sand. By building nuclear reactors now while they have the cash for it they can be in a position to be major electricity exporters 15 years from now. On top of that the reactors will pay for themselves, natural gas and heavy oil that would normally be consumed by there electric grid can be exported for $80 dollars a barrel when the reactors start coming online.

But Mein Fuhrer Bush said all Iran wants to do is declare Jihad and build weapons. Apparently that is all Islamic governments are good for.

Iran doesn't have much sand...maybe you are confusing it with Iraq, your uneducated assumption is quite pathetic.

terrain: "rugged, mountainous rim; high, central basin with deserts, mountains; small, discontinuous plains along both coasts" white=mountains, green=deserts

exports: "petroleum, petrochemicals, textiles, cement and other construction materials, food processing (particularly sugar refining and vegetable oil production), metal fabrication, armaments"

resources: " petroleum, natural gas, coal, chromium, copper, iron ore, lead, manganese, zinc, sulfur"
