Wasn't there supposed to be a beta or something for people that bought borderlands goty or something?

Access to the demo for people that either a) purchased the GOTY or b) purchased borderlands before a certain date (can't remember what it was).

Don't think there is an ETA on the demo...

I wonder what happens to all those people who pre-ordered Duke like 3 years ago when Gamestop or whoever put pre-orders up.

I wonder what happens to all those people who preordered DNF 10 years ago when the preorders were available. I have heard many that preorded around the 2000 time frame.

Since pre-orders have been around for this game for over a decade now, this new "pre-order" on Steam doesn't make me believe it is any closer to release than if it wasn't available.

I got to play a build of DNF at Gearbox about three weeks ago. And because of the NDA I signed, that's all I can say. That and I had a great time at Gearbox.

The difference here is there is a definite date set by the developer. 3drealms would always deny supposed release dates in the past when someone would post it. They even had an entry in the FAQ that dealt with preorders and they would always say to not believe anything you see unless you heard about it from there first.

Here, 2K, is saying that "Yes" it will release on this date. I have no doubt that we will see DNF next month...

I really don't get the excitement over this game. I love old school shooters, but they have stripped out many of the key features that I feel are needed for that kind of gameplay to work. This half way, old meets new approach has always been horrible, IMO.

What features?

Well, health regen is the big and obvious one, but then you have the seemingly pointless limited weapon carrying, sprinting lowering your gun, quick time events, and leveling in multiplayer. There may or may not be other things, but I see no reason why that stuff exists in a game claiming to capture old school shooter game play. If people end up enjoying it, no problems here, but it appears to be nothing but a run of the mill modern shooter with a Duke attitude.

/2 cents.

will wait for sale
i rarely buy at release for full or nearly full price anymore since it seems most games go on sale very shortly after release

Yep, Portal 2 settled at $30 only two weeks after release day down 40% from initial $50 MSRP. I'm still waiting for it to hit $10-20 pricepoint though. I'm in no hurry and it's summer season, no point in sitting inside playing games when it's so nice out, that's what winter is for. Same with DNF, I'll wait until it's winter to pick it up for a bargain, I still have to finish Duke Nuken Manhattan Project anyway, it was a very fun game, but I just never had time to play it through.

Its that whole DN attitude that made DN, in part, a huge success. Its not often this happens in a game. The whole DN character is unique unto itself. Of course the fun game play also helped tremendously DN a huge success.

We already know that DNF will not push any graphics boundary. The game is more evolutionary than revolutionary albeit its late in coming. If the game play is fun and has the classic DN character attitude I think it will be successful in its own right. The DN fans will enjoy it and for those that weren't involved in PC gaming over 13 years ago will find it enjoyable too.

Boy as vaporware this puts Battlecruiser 3000AD to shame. The original people working on the project have probably all retired by now.

I will buy the game but I never pay full price for games anymore unless they are absolute must-haves e.g. Portal 2. I'll wait for one fo the Steam sales as they offer proper value unless an online retailer does it cheaper. There must be some good content in the game though, it's been so long in the making.

Actually BC 3k did release. Buggy and unfinished but it did release. In fact Derek Smart did some updates to it after release. Its still a big letdown as far as gaming goes. One of the biggest stinkers in gaming history.

The people that are putting out DNF now are not the devs of DNF that took over 10 years before finally getting canned. The Duke we'll be getting is nowhere near 10 years in the making like some of you are thinking.

The story I heard was that Gearbox started working on it in 2008 before it even left 3D Realms.

It is still the same 12 year in development game. Gearbox just really polished what 3D Realms already did, and put a line in the sand to actually release it. It isn't some new game that Gearbox wrote, it is the 3D Realms game with some direction at the end to stop scope creep.

There are plenty of interviews out that kind of show you how the project finally is getting finished.

The ETA was in the "definitive" release date video...

Something like the 14th?
