Graphics aren't as bad as everyone claims. You want to see bad graphics - take a look at the old duke nukem 4ever trailers - I can't believe we actually were looking forward to that crappy looking game 12 years ago....

I can definitely see why people would complain - it's very linear like most other modern FPS games but this one has the duke nukem humor, naked [topless] hot chicks and sex, and over the top violence. The game does force you to become aware of what's going on around you - and I could see that as being painful for someone with ADHD and just wants to KILL KILL KILL as soon as the game starts.

So far - it feels like the linearity of Half Life 2 with the humor/sex/violence of Duke Nukem.

It really is not that bad.. considering its a game that doesn't take itself seriously.. I kinda got what I expected from it.. aliens, sex, guns and violence.. and bad one liners.. as expected..

I pre-ordered it myself, on Steam it's not even unlocked yet, so he's saying he's already played a locked game before it was unlocked. AND already's been able to sell it on Craigslist? That's pretty damn impressive

I don't want to call them a liar, but the only way the game would be playable is if they downloaded a pirated version. So basically they just admitted to selling a pirated game on Craigslist. There's no legal way to already be playing the game, or I would be playing it right now instead of posting this.

I was at Wal Mart buying a 3DS for my daughter and noticed they had them in the case.
I was surprised the system let me purchase it as usually even if it's on the shelf the POS system will flag it.
It wouldn't activate through Steam, so I DLed a crack for it.
I let the guy knew who bought it that it wouldn't activate until the 14th. He got it for half what I paid, so he wasn't about to complain.
If I had a video game budget and was only able to buy one game a month I would have been pissed at how bad it was, but I just played Red Faction Armageddon instead and I'm enjoying it.

DNF isn't bad

- i probably have a couple of hours into it. It IS linear. The graphics are good. 3D Vision is MUCH better implemented than Bulletstorm (it adds, does not detract). The guns are good - but you only get two (so far). The puzzles are many - but easy. And the Duke's comments fit the game just as Tommy's did in PREY. It is his Ego trip.

This game is a satire (Like Serious Sam) that doesn't take itself seriously. And there is variety. i drove a small remote controlled vehicle, and blasted a mother ship. The story is stupid - but who cares? Lots of alien butt to kick.

i guess i am approaching DNF as someone who has never played the previous games and had no expectations whatsoever. From what i can see so far, it's a mindless fragfest with puzzles. it is occupying my time and holding my interest.

my biggest gripe with DNF is that half the time, I don't know where I'm suppose to go... there's no map or anything... Like heck do I know where the "Duke Dome" is suppose to be? That's really annoying... Though they make it so there's only one way you can move: forward or backward... (I hate retracting... makes me feel like I'm not making any progress) But the levels themselves *Seems* open ended, which pisses you off some more, because it makes you feel even more "lost".

Now all we need now is the smoke monster...

I like it, don't love it, but the one-liners are great as hell so far. I laughed when Duke was shrunk to action figure size and the mother with her son said "I know where I'd put him!"

Graphics are fine, and the fact I can max them out on my aging computer is a big plus. I don't regret buying it what-so-ever. It's not great but it will definitely keep me amused, and I haven't tried MP yet. If it has a football field map like the original did. That alone will make it worth the price of admission for me. That's probably my 2nd favorite MP map of all time for any game.

I don't get that reviewer griping about load times, when I die it's definitely not even close to a minute. His computer must suck, or something's wrong with it, mine isn't even that fast and the load times are excellent here. Bottom line, it's not as good as I had hoped, but I don't get the "ZMOG WORST GAME EVAR 2/10!!!" I'd say it's 7/10 imho.

Well I'm off to play Duke

Ouch! This game is getting ripped by the reviewers. Current metacritic scores for PC, 360, and PS3 are 60, 51, and 58 respectively. It's been a long road for DNF that looks like it ends in a mediocre game. I'll pick it up for old time's sake when it drops in price.

The load times (for me) were one of the best things about the game. From clicking on the icon to actually playing was less than 30 seconds, and loading levels was less than 10. It probably has to do with it being an old engine, but that was impressive to me. (FYI, not using an SSD)

It blows me away hearing the excuses being made for this game. I've been playing games since PONG and all of the excuses I've heard for this being sub-par are ridiculous. I was a fan of Duke back in the day, but not a rabid one, so waiting for DNF wasn't a big deal to me. I didn't mind not shooting right away. Duke's comeback had to be setup, and I enjoyed the Nukem museum and all that.
I don't care how long it was in development, how iconic Duke is, how we (somehow) shouldn't have expected much, or why they pushed it out with an old engine and such limited gameplay.
Saying the graphics were good compared to the unfinished game in 2001 is insane reasoning.
There were good parts to the game, but overall it was a poor FPS with forced nostalgia goggles.
If you enjoy this, I'm glad, but don't make excuses for it.
I'm not sure I've ever uninstalled a game halfway through before this.

The wrecking ball was fun.

The complaints about loading times are for the console versions, at least that's been my reading of it so far.

I believe this is the case, but there are always people with P4s and GeForce 6200s and a slow drive loaded with junk taking up resources complaining about how slow it is to load and run. This happens with every game.
Gamespot/faqs forums = "You played DNF on the 10th and it's not out yet-PIRATE!!" (It's an international forum, and EU got it on the 10th.) and "Will my P4 run this? I have integrated graphics if that's important."
If you ever think AT is bad, go see the kids over there freak out on each other.

I'll agree with that. I'm insanely happy I didn't spend 45 bucks on this game, but I'd happily play it for less than five. I picked $5 because that's how much it would cost to rent from blockbuster on the PS3, and given the reviews, seems like a fair price.

For titles like this (sequel to a beloved classic, too many years in the making surrounded by mystery & hype), the current response is unavoidable. It is near impossible to live up to fan expectations in cases like this (there are few exceptions). I have no doubt the game has its issues, but by virtue of the latter it was doomed to failure. Unfortunately the current reviews confirm my suspicions and I will likely pass on this one. DNF imo is this year's Daikatana. And having played Duke 3D in the halcyon days known as the 1990's it makes me sad.

Played the original back in the day and was excited for this but luckily I was able to cancel my pre-order yesterday (surprised they let me).

I'll wait for a steam sale to pick it up...

I think it is avoidable. Look at team fortress 2 for example.

Is it high exceptions, or developers/publishers being out of touch with consumers?

From some of the reviews I saw, the game is too scripted, too linear, and has too many "turret" sections. Turret sections? Come on, turrets are for arcade games.

It makes me sad, too, for the same reasons. But I'm not sure about the "doomed to fail" idea. The "Duke Nukem" name has epic legendary brand recognition in the gaming community. What a phenomenal missed opportunity to create a durable franchise. They should have scrapped all the prior work and gone back to bare metal. It still would have been worth it if the game rocked.

I played for about 2 hours last night after it was released. I agree completely with this review. People take life way too serious which is why so many people are putting this game down. It's satire... get over it.

I'm sorry but TF2 is not TF. I don't care how popular it is, it is not the same game.

The haters are the ones who will never play it and they are taking embittered reviewers word for it (on XBox360, no less with Slow-ass load times and crap graphics to boot - nothing like the PC version evidently on a decent system)

It LOOKS great .. it is funny and IRREVERENT and it INTENDS to OFFEND
- what is not to like about that?

i think some of the reviewers with ultra-unrealistic expectations and haters who will never play it, need to get a stick outta their keisters and admit they are getting OLD
^_^

Oh, I'll play it... Just not for $50...

I'm surprised that you would say the graphics look great though. Unless they drastically improved the graphics from the demo, I just don't see how anyone could argue that angle.

i agree about the $55 price. it is a superb bargain bin game. i don't pay for any of my games any more, but i understand value.

i didn't see the demo (i had to save my bandwidth for the full game D/L). The graphics are very decent for a modern game.
- and they make a very good use of S3D - way better than Bulletstorm.
