Dumb drivers: Idiots that know that a lane is closing/merging yet proceed to fly down it and pull in front of people!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, I was driving on I-40 this morning and the right lane was going to end due to construction...but these jackasses kept flying down at insane speeds trying to get the jump on everyone and cut over to the left lane instead of merging WAY back up the line. This is even AFTER they see the two BIG "Right Lane Ends" signs on either sign of the road. And of course, they slow down everyone else as they flip on their turn signals to merger over. Two fuggin' bastards tried that sh!t on me and tried to merge in front of me after they made the "mad dash" to the finish. I simply hugged the bumper of the van in front of me and wouldn't let 'em over.

Retards!!!:|

I've seen this done......and have done it myself when I wasn't in the best of moods.

the most efficient use of the available highway would be for everyone in all lanes to proceed to the merge point and zipper merge. I would question why you line up like sheep 2 miles before the merge point rather than merge at the designated spot?

what the most fun is if someone is driving on the shoulder and you go half way out of the road to block them from passing. It also helps if the person behind you doesnt let them in.

My dad did this once and got the shoulder rider to get really mad, it was rather funny.

I always pray that one of the cars that they pass is a police car... that'd be sweet!

i havenever pushed anyone down a ditch No, i mean that the person attempting to cut will have to continue to drive where the lane was, usually a shoulder filled with smashed glass. I wouldnt do that on an embankment. The problem with "zipper" merging is that in michigan there are quite a few exits and entrances that are within 100ft of each other. For example, The offramp to east and and onramp west bound M-59 from I-75 is a distaster area because there are seperate ramp for east and west and both are very close to each other, one on ramp and one off ramp. the offramp is past the onramp, so people have to dart between traffic doing 75 and traffic doing 35. It is a mess.

Think about it for a second. When you have two cars next to each other, they are only taking up the length of 1 car, but twice as wide. When they have to merge into one lane, for safety one of them slows down to get behind the other. This in turn slows down the cars behind both of the original cars, who still have to slow down to merge also. It's a domino effect when there is a lot of traffic, and cars get backed up for miles. The only way to solve the problem would be to have all the cars speed up and put more people in danger.

OMG, I know exactly where you're talking about. It's nerve-racking.....the worst are indecisive people......very scary.

has anyone else perfected the art of not braking in a traffic jam? I have mastered it well enough that even in metro detroit gridlock i can get by with no brakes for miles.

This is something I've fought with since coming to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area a month ago... But I've noticed that normally when lanes are closed/merging, it's been stop & go (or at least very slow). And I, too, think it's stupid to have traffic backed up for miles because the lane ends 2 miles ahead. So what I typically do (for right or wrong),is keep going until I'm approaching the end of the lane (I don't try & wait until the end of the lane!) and I try to find a place where there's enough gap that I can slip into while the car behind is still trying to accelerate. More often than not (that I've seen), slow traffic like this opens up gaps since everyone accelerates differently. I try & fill the gap. And yeah, it sucks for the people in the way back, because there's now another car in front of them, but... hey, I believe in some basic laissez-faire economic principles - if everyone does what is in their best interest to do, the system will maximize efficiency.

And yeah, I've had ppl try to pass me on the shoulder - and *that* pisses me off, since driving on the shoulder is illegal. Driving on the road, however - I say do it (nicely, though - I don't try to butt in or force my way in unless I absolutely have to - I try to avoid creating that situation).

Just my $0.02...

Not entirely on topic but this is traffic related: SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT!

If anyone here is bitching about these people "merging" as such, but forget the above rule and block countless other people in doing so, then you have no right to complain. I have to agree with Linflas, I think its kinda retarded to line up miles before you've made it to where you go. Part of the whole "flock mentality" that seems to affect most drivers out there, I suppose. Why is it even the most brilliant people out there become 'tards behind the wheel of a car? It makes no sense me at all, frankly most other people (the one's that are using only 10% of their conscious minds are the worst) on the road, scare me.

Last time I blocked someone a few weeks ago, he hit the side of my car. I stopped, got out to look at my car (not too much damn-age, but damn!), and he decided that would be a good time to drive away. He, driving an 87-ish S-10 Blazer, could not out drive me and my Civic with my mad pizza driving skillaz. I was on the hellular to 911, and the dispacher told me to let him go, so I did as soon as I gave her the licence plate number. He was running red lights anyway, and I didn't feel safe chasing him.

The dude was stupid because had he stopped, I would have looked at my car (again, not much damage, just an 8 inch long dent ¼ inch or so deep, and some ugly tire rub marks that will buff right off) and told him it was cool, don?t worry about it. But now he?s got a hit and run on file.

i do that all the time. it's still a lane. you don't have to merge way back in the line. it's not like i'm driving on the shoulder of the road. so i take the empty lane while you take the slow, full lane.

who's the dumb driver again?

Then you proceed to fly down the closing lane and dart in between cars that are already jammed together b/c of the merging traffic...yeah that's even better

I've even seen a few big-rigs block traffic to stop the tards from flying down the closing lane

You sir are discourteous driver, and as the ROAD AVENGER I could only hope that you would pull that stunt in front of me.

and what would you do, wave your fist angrily at me?

i don't "fly" down the lane. i drive at a normal speed, and there is almost always an opening because of somebody who takes 20 seconds to realize that the car in front of them is moving. i just get in front of that particular slow idiot.

Similar thing happens to me all the time - There's a wierd merging lane near the onramp to the I-10 I use.. it's like 2 lanes that are divided from the freeway that run alongside it for a couple miles, and there's a spot or two where one can merge onto it from the main freeway to exit.. So I'm driving on the left side of this thing (next to the last lane of the freeway itself) and this guy starts merging into my lane; and I maintain my speed so he'll end up reaching my lane after I've passed him. But what's he do? HE SPEEDS UP and tries to pass me! WTF! I do nothing and maintain my speed (65mph) and he ends up nearly next to me in the same lane. I just blare on my horn until he backs off. I dunno what his problem was.

I never, ever let those inconsiderate bastards in. I don't do anything wrong, I don't cut anyone off or run anyone off the road. I simply ride as close as possible to the car in front of me so they can't get in.

You would think that some people would have learned that taking "cuts" was wrong all the way back in kindergarten... :disgust:
