It depends if the special effects supervisor of the movie you are watching did his job correctly.

It will click once as the hammer or firing pin drops. Since there is no round to cycle the action, it's done.

I guess an assisted action like a minigun would be different but I'm no expert on their operation. I think the rotating cylinder actually sets the firing pin and round chambering which is why they're so dangerous. Just rotating the cylinder can fire a round.

I'm working on a movie its dark so you dont see a mechanism and its a smg of some kind. It is out of ammo trigger pulled and held. I am doing the sound effect.

So does a modern mini-gun really fire by rotating the cylinder? The cylinder rotating actually chambers and let's the pin fall on the round behind it?

Inquiring minds want to know. Does a mini-gun go "whir, whir, whir" as in Predator or not?

Nah, the rotation is there for visual effects to make the gun look bad ass. It actually just fires from one barrel, so the bullets come out in a spiral.

firing from multiple barrels has a purpose. it spreads the heat produced over several barrels, instead of just one. it allows for sustained firing for longer periods.

edit: whoa, i totally misunderstood your post. i guess it would depend on which system you're referring to? something like a door gunner on a blackhawk, or a phalanx defense system?

according to this, the external power source one might be able to spin freely. but at least one incarnation relies on gas scavenged from firing, so it won't.

Right. I'm talking about the modern mini-gun based on GE style, needs external rotation of the barrels. Dillon sells them and we have a big machine gun shoot here in KY. Last one was just a few weeks ago. They are not you're typical automatic weapon but are pure joy to watch them in action.

Depends entirely on the weapon. Most of the time there will be a bolt hold open engage when the magazine is empty, so there will not be a final click. The bolt simply is held to the rear like in the m16.

Belt feed machinegun like an M60, yes I believe there is a final click as the hammer drops on an empty chamber.

Must be a really high budget movie if the effects supervisor has to ask a question on an internet forum before he can do his job.

this. Revolver would be one click for each pull of the trigger, semi will be one clip period.

This is truth. M16 and stoner based AR's won't click after bolt hold open.

It depends on the weapon type if the bolt is held back or if you have to pull the bolt back again. M16 variants the bolt is held back and you simply tap the weapon or press the button to release the bolt forward. Thereby rechambering a round.

AK47 on the other hand has to have the bolt pulled back once empty.

grrrrr this. I was watching some stupid adams family movie on TV and this chick fired a huge hand gun with bent elbows in sort of a stereotyped girl way. That would probably fly back and hit her in the face in real life. Guns like the .45 will kick your ass if you're not holding onto it properly.

do not aim it at your head.

Eh, my friends girlfriend shot my kimber ultra about a month ago and I turned my back for just a second, turned back around as she was pulling the trigger with her face barely a foot away from the back of the gun and her elbows bent. Scared the shit out of her but didn't hit her or anything. She's only about 4'11" lol.

Now with a 44 mag or 454 or 500...You'd have a broken nose.

i'd have been more concerned with her dropping it.

But in Counter-Strike my M4 goes click-click-click-click. So does my AK-47. Therefore it must be true.

The "jams" you had to clear in gears of war were pretty realistic. One or two of the weapons you could see the character banging on the forward assist or opening and closing the bolt.

It depends on the gun. There are some double action only semi-autos that will cock the hammer back and fire when you pull the trigger on an empty chamber.
