I have a pair of cheapo dumbells I keep around the house for when I can't get to the gym. They are limited to 20lbs on each dumbell. If I do several sets of various exercises with them on days I can't get to the gym, does that still help since I can lift more that 20lbs with almost all of the exercises I do?
So in other words. . . if I lift a 'sub maximal' weight - but for more reps than a heavier weight, does that help build any muscle? Or am I wasting my time?
Like at the gym, I can do an isolated barbell curl for 2 sets of 10 with 40lbs on one barbell. Will it do any good at home to do say 4 sets of 10 with 20lbs on one barbell?

I know weightlifiting is about progression, but at some point most people must just be happy with what they can lift as everyone would eventually progress to some insane weight (which you don't see alot of).
