"I can't get to the internet. When AOL comes on, it says 'enter password' and I type in 'password' but it says that it is an invalid password! Do I need a new keyboard?"

I love making $50/hour service calls to AOL users...

Here's a funny one that I heard from a friend. Some lady was calling tech support trying to get a NASCAR game to work for her son, the tech asked her what drivers the kid was using and she responded, "Jeff Gordon."

btw are the cupholder stories really true? I mean come on, they can't be.

One I had last week:

Can my printer print in color?

Lady, you just spent $800 on this printer & you don't know whether or not it will print in color?

:Q

BTW, it was a B&W laser she had.

One of my more frustrating calls was trying to explain to a home user why there were both an ISP and a line provider charge on his Qwest bill.

Why can't I just be my own ISP?

I work for a cable ISP, and the dumbest question (more like a statement) was:

"I can get onto the internet fine, but i cant get onto your service. I think you're broken."

I then asked the customer if the cablemodem was hooked up, which it was, if she was getting a valid IP address, which she was.. i then went thru the pinging process, seeing if she can ping IP addresses, domain names, stuff like that.. which she could.

I then asked what happened when she opened up Internet Explorer or Netscape... her response?

"Oh.. is that how i get onto your service... i've been going thru AOL and the internet works fine, but i couldnt get onto your service"

dumb stupid people should not own a computer.

"My monitor is all black, I can't see anything I'm typing!!!!"

"Ma'am, is it turned on?"

*long uncomfortable silence*

"Those damn kids must have pulled it out while we were talking, thanks bye"

*insert barrel into mouth*

I hate people sometimes

That is why I couldn't work tech support...you all are saints.

I would start pulling some mean Dogbert pranks on those people: I'd spend three hours walking them through the disassembly of their computer over a minor driver issue and then hang-up (I wouldn't use my real name either, no use getting fired over it...I'd help them under an alias).

This just happened the other day:

I got work order to go look at a PC that supposedly would not boot.

I get down there to where it was and a lady says, "See it won't start!"

She was pushing the power button for the monitor!!!!!

Here ya go. This was from where I work, Home Depot. ( these do not have to be computer related right? )

Anyway, I work in the millwork department ( Doors and Moulding ) and a 40 year old gentelman came to my desk. Guy spoke perfect english ( you will see why this is important in a minute ) and looked like a regular Joe.

The guy came up to my desk and said, "I want to plant a tree in my yard, what do I dig the hole with?" I figured that the guy wanted to know if there was a special shovel for trees or something. I get stupid questions all day long, so this was not new. That Orange apron means you know everything. So anyway, I told the guy to use a "shovel". ( I was in kind of a bad mood, and I thought the guy was trying to be funny or something ) The guy looked at me with a blank look on his face, and said ( and I quote ) "what is a shovel?"

I looked at him with eyes that had to be as big as saucers ( according to Mike, a part timer there that day ) and said, " you do not know what a shovel is?" Then I started to laugh my butt off right in the guys face. I actually figured it was a gu from another store picking up a transfer cracking a joke ( we do not wear our aprons in other stores ) The guy got a pissed look on his face and stormed off.

About 20 minutes later I got a page from a ASM ( Assistant Manager ) to come back to the office. I got back there, and he had a writeup for me. He said that the guy hunted him down and scremed at him on my behavior. So now, "laughed at guy who did not know what a shovel was" is now on my permant record!

Idiots.

In my school's computer science class once...

"Mr. (name), the cd drive won't read my disk!"
"Well let's just have a look..."

Moments later, we make this astounding discovery: the fool stuck a FLOPPY into the CD-ROM drive...

The floppy came out, well, not really a floppy anymore...it had suffered...'heavy battle damage'. Anyways, the floppy actually still works, but it now hangs on the wall...a memorial to utter stupidity

for every end user story i could give you a help desk story.

here is one:

Me: My Iomega zip is causing my computer from booting. I can't even get my BIOS SCREEN.

Tech: Put in a DOS disc and try BOOTING.

Me: I can't even get to the BIOS SCREEN. HOW do you expect me to boot to DOS???

Here's another:

I'm calling @home tech about trying to get my pop email thru Hotmail.

Me: hey can you give me the POP and SMTP so that I can access my @home email thru Hotmail.

Tech: just type MAIL.

(and this was supposedly a LEVEL 2 Support person)
face it fellas, tech support aint all it's cracked up to be.

mail.mntp1.il.home.com ( Pop and SMTP )

Illinois anyway. Which, by the way, still answers pings from me even on ATT servers

thx. i eventually got it outta them. i had to go thru like 4 different level 2 techs before any of them could answer the question. there is always the occasional geek in tech support that knows more about the stuff than just whats in their little books. and one of those finally came to my rescue.

for me it's netmail.home.com

but it'll probably change once att@home gets rid of excite @home and moves over to Comcasts Servers.
