i was fishing on a steep rock(we hadnt planned on fishing there), and my tacklebox just up and slid into the river... fully submerged.
the camera is a finepix a205, i took the batteries out, the xd media, and now im letting it air dry.
what are the chances it will still function?

Make sure you leave it a good long time in a nice warm dry spot. Airing cupboards are good.

Maybe try drowning it in contact cleaner too...

Ive dunked a kodak easyshare into the drink one time, after 4 days of drying out she came out good as new. Same thing goes for key chain thumb drives and wireless mice (don't ask)...

There's really nothing non-water proof in electronics besides the display. The only reason they don't work when they are wet is because the water shorts out the boards when it carries current where it shouldnt go.

Honestly, I wouldnt be surprised if you came out of this with a cleaner good working camera.

Although most electronics well work when dried out, things like cameras will slowly become damaged as corrosion will start to build on the things that matter like the micro focusing motors.

My personal opinion is dump it. It's never worth possibly losing a photo of that "special" moment. Even if it seems to work for a while, what happens if it doesnt work, or photos aren't tack sharp when you need it.

My cell phone was on and it went into the lake with me . I ran back out and it wasn't really working, just vibrating slowly... I took it totally apart and let it dry in front of my fan. After a few hours, I put it back together and it worked like a charm.

I slipped on the rock in Hawaii a few years ago, with a point-and-shoot 35MM in my hand. I dunked it right in a pool of saltwater, and it zapped me a bit as it fried
It had one of those big batteries for the flash.

I'm not sure if it's that the water shorts out the board, but water is a great dielectric and introduces huge capacitances.

I think it's the impurities in the water that can short out stuff, especially since it was in a river with a lot of minerals I'm sure.

The flash memory is fine, and wouldn't be surprised if the camera still works after letting it dry out for a week. However, I doubt it will be at 100%, so just get a new camera. It's not like a 2 MP camera is really worth fussing over.

I'd submerge it in distilled water a couple of times, just to make sure I could wash out as much of the crap as possible that might have gotten in there... THEN I'd take the steps you are to get it dry. I might also put it in a warm spot (but not where it could overheat, such as in direct sunlight.)

nothing doing.
i stick the batteries in, i do not get a display/ or any indication that its on except for i hear some small motor trying to engage and thats it.

i think it might be over for the a205, i cant complain, i got thousands of pics out of it..and it took alot of abuse the last two years in particular.
