I read the first book 4 times I think but always shied away from the rest of them and definitely avoided the ones written by his son. Have you read them all?

The books are pretty good.

I still like the first the best, but the following few books were a great read too. Plus they were really short IIRC, so its not like you waste a lot of time reading them. The story takes some good twists and turns, and its overall pretty enjoyable.

I actually have a couple other Dune books sitting around waiting for me to read as well.

When it came out it was pretty cool but as its SFX aren't state of the art anymore it's rather long in the tooth.

I liked it when I first saw it. But my Uncle hated it because it deviated from the books too much.

the SyFy miniseries is truer to the story but the Movie's set and art design is much better than the miniseries imo.

I've read the 6 books original series and the newer books turn the series into a franchise that is a pale imitation of the original works.

For one thing a couple of characters at the end of book 6 suddenly having their natures changed for the newer books doesn't feel right.

There are forum threads on dune specific sites that go into this in more detail.

I read the books after seeing the movie so I liked the movie more than my uncle did but I can understand why someone who read the books first wouldn't like the movie.

Movie is bad ass. Saw it on cable not too long ago and i think it still holds up well. The PC game was also amazing.

Awesome when I first saw it on the ultra big screen in Overland Park, KS. I still enjoy it - never saw the SciFi remake as I wasn't interested in having my original impression tainted.

I'd suggest Dune: Extended Edition for the extras.

I liked the first Dune book. The movie absolutely sucked, IMO.

FWIW, I first read the novel more than 40 years ago.

When it came out, people were pissed and I heard nothing good about it for years. Now people look back on it fondly.

MY real biggest problem with the movie, as with any book I love that is made into a movie, is that it's too short. Too much lost content.

I'm thinking HBO series would be nice.

I never even read the book and I felt it was too short. Still like the movie though.

Not forbidden to the guild members though right?

thou shall not make a computer in the likeness of the human mind!

nope, it's one of the commandments in the orange catholic bible. *noone* is allowed to make or use thinking computers.

of course, the tlielaxu eventually begin making computers again, but that's thousands of years after the events of Dune.

the original book should stand by itself regardless of adaptation. it has enough material to fill a 24 episode season without introducing worthless filler, and any subsequent books or setting up the material for a sequel shouldn't happen. (it is my opinion that the subsequent books of the series were sub-par)

the guild had computers? then why spice-out to the max and live in the aquarium?

i read the book, and i'm pretty sure the navigators in the book were visibly human and didn't live in a tank. their most distinguishing feature was eyes so dark blue they were nearly black.

the tank is one of david lynch inventions, along with heartplugs and the fat baron's disgusting skin diseases. is it so much to ask to make the baron simply fat without this cartoonesque villian quality where he has to have MULTIPLE things grotesquely wrong with him?

Dune is about subtlety. not this ridiculousness.

Fayd... wasn't that one of the characters in Dune? The Barons nephew assassin or whatever he was?

Nope - nobody, not even the guild, were allowed computers. Hence the reason for the existence of the guild - the prescience granted to them by the spice enabled them to safely traverse hyperspace.

Guild agents were normal humans, but navigators never appeared in the original book. Their first appearance was the second Dune book - Edric does indeed live in a tank, and is deformed.

He should have never written a sequel. Dune is probably the best single book I have ever read. Even the next two sequels were nowhere near as good. I think I've read the first Dune book about 5 times now, and every time I read it, I'm amazed at how detailed the world is, and how interesting the characters are.

Frank Herbert's own Dune sequels were comparatively not great, but his son's were downright terrible. I remember reading the first few pages of one and putting it down, I just couldnt do it.

I really like the David Lynch movie. It's dated but it still looks really stylish compared to modern stuff.

I like Robocop better though. That film is a masterpiece.

Back in the late eighties I think it was a Fox that had a 4 hour version of Dune without the narration in the beginning. Remember staying up late on a Saturday night watching it; wonder if it’s still available?

The sleeper has awakened.....

Good movie, especially considering it's age. They did a decent job staying true to the book within the limits of a 2 hour movie. I would love to see an expanded mini-series.

What movie were you watching, because what I saw wasn't even remotely close? By the way, there is a mini-series. It's still not great, but it's better than that awful movie.
