(I DO realize that I've been slacking!)

Review of Part 1:

TL;DR: The book took you on the journey with Paul; the movie was more like a documentary of his situation. Very cinematic but not like, a super-duper compelling movie. Worth a watch if you like pretty pictures!

The new trailer is pretty sick.

I still wish Denis wasn't such a snob, that first one needed an extended cut. Too much stuff was left out and cut out that would have given the movie more depth.

I feel the same way about the final two books, the ones that Brian Herbert wrote, based off his father's notes.

There is an amazing depth to all of the characters written by Frank Herbert that is missing from the Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson books.

Color me impressed.

This one is to be seen in a IMAX

And I loved the books, but you can't get all the details from a descriptive book into a visual medium. As they failed with the Asimov's Foundation, even though that was a series, without getting into the needless gender and colour changes they made.

I'm boycotting the movie if Feyd-Rautha isn't in some form of a space speedo.

Behold the glory of the space speedo!

-Bronzed, cut, Sting in a space speedo is very different than weird albino new age harkonnen in a space speedo...

why did that albino have an edge on atreides?

Feyd was raised by the Harkonnens from birth to be a killing machine; they are a nasty bunch of dudes. If you want spoilers:

In the Dune universe, you have a few key groups:

1. The Emperor (head boss of the universe)
2. The Bene Gesserit (sneaky witches pulling the strings behind the scenes)
3. House Atreides (Paul & co)
4. The Harkonnens (the house opposing the Atreides, basically the Nazis dudes of the Dune story)

The planet Arrakis (aka Dune, a desert planet) produces the Spice drug, which is basically a brain steroid that could make you live three times as long. It turns your eyes blue & everyone in the universe is hooked on it. The Emperor assigns management of Arrakis to a House. The Atreides got to take over Dune because the Harkonnens were screwing up production & thus profits. But really, Hosue Atreides was getting pretty popular, so the Emperor wants to take them out. By giving them Dune, it casts a shadow on House Harkonnen, who then will want to take out House Atreides, meaning the Emperor can wipe out a political threat and get more control over the Harkonnens.

To compare it to modern politics, think of Dune like the Middle East & Spice like oil. Everyone needs it & everyone wants to control it. To simplify & put a stereotypical political spin on it, think of the Russians as House Harkonnen & America as House Atreides, then private companies with lobbyists as the Bene Gesserit, pulling the strings behind the scenes & lining things up to get the outcome they desire.

Meanwhile, the Bene Gesserit are kind of running the show behind the scenes. One of their projects is a long-term breeding program designed to produce the Kwisatz Haderach, which is basically their version of a Super Saiyan, who can use the spice to unlock all of the various benefits in a single person. The culmination of the bloodlines is for Duke Leto Atreides (Paul's dad) to have a daughter, who marries into House Harkonnen. Except Paul's mom goofs up 10,000 years of selective breeding by choosing to have a boy instead of a girl. Feyd could have married the female version of Paul & produced the Kwisatz Haderach.

So the Bene Gesserit need some way to save the bloodline, so they send someone to seduce Feyd in order to obtain a child that has his genetic material. Because he's so dangerous, their envoy also hypnotizes him using a special command word that can paralyze him. He almost kills Paul in one-on-one combat, but Paul refuses to use that keyword because he doesn't want to be beholden to the Bene Gesserit, so Paul has to use his own training to defeat Feyd. For the rest of the story, stayed tuned for the movie!

Just to follow up on what @Kaido wrote.

Feyd was supposed to have been breeded to be one of the two parents of what should have been the Kwisats Haderach. The female counterpart to Feyd being a female version of Paul Atreides, had Paul's mother followed orders.

This means Feyd is genetically as special, or damn near as special, as Paul himself.

The hard part with the Dune books is getting past the political nonsense, which I always just kind of glossed through. I focused on the story of Paul & becoming Muad'Dib. My problem with the new movies is that they are an amazing visual spectacle, but it's like we're watching a documentary of Paul & House Atreides from a distance, where as the story follows the very personal journey of Paul & what he goes through in order to become who he is destined to become. Dune is my favorite sci-fi book of all time! The rest of the books kind of make the story fall apart, but are still fun to read! And most of the movies are weird, but all of them offer a different perspective on the story. The Sci-fi channel's mini series was actually pretty decent, complete with Farscape-style early 2000's CGI, haha!

I don't remember, but it was probably from one of his future visions that guide his actions.

If I remember correctly Paul dies in the book Children of Dune.
yeah, taking the series in a whole new direction.
why all that build up to just off him? and so unceremoniously?
at least they killed chewbacca by throwing a moon at him

FWIW, it's supposed to be anticlimatic, as per the books. His son Leto II takes over, goes full-on worm hybrid, and rules the galaxy for a few thousand years...it gets weird lol.
