I finally finished the first movie. Not too impressed. It's been a LONG time since I read Dune, and it seems like they've followed the basics of the story...but with a lot of "artistic license."

Messiah is coming (maybe):

Was there any previous movies that only had dune and messiah?

Should have made a trilogy of the first book rather than miss so much stuff in the first part of Dune.

.....at least they killed chewbacca by throwing a moon at him
Off-topic, but R.A. Salvatore really pissed me off with that crap. Talk about taking liberties with one of the most popular and long-lasting characters in the SW universe. It was pointless and entirely unnecessary.

I read a lot of his Forgotten Realms novels when I was younger, but that SW: Vector Prime was his last book that I purchased. There won't be more.

On-topic: I liked the (new) first Dune film but agree that it was missing a lot, and felt sterile and impersonal. I'm still looking forward to the second film though, for the visuals if nothing else. I know the story already so I can always fill in holes from memory.

In the non-canon book universe, I lost interest at the Yuuzhan Vong stuff. Like, there were some good stories & fun concepts like the Dovin Basal (re: Chewbacca), but I felt like they could have done adventure stories forever. iirc there were 20 or so books in the series & I never made it all the way through. Might have to revisit them at some point!

And while I understand why Disney had to drop the absolute treasure trove of books (most likely due to licensing rights & costs), man...they could have cranked out a new Star Wars movie every month for the next 50 years & all of us Star Wars nerds would see EVERY SINGLE ONE lol. I mean, I love the Mandalorian, but if we're being honest, it's kinda boring. And Book Of Fett is slow AND boring (not hating!)...it felt like a chore getting through some of the episodes, even though I enjoyed the visuals & liked the story (I'd like to see it recut into a movie or maybe a 4-part mini-series!). But I get it, they wanted fresh stories with (mostly) new characters, wanted to make toys & rides, etc.

As far as Dune 2 goes, yeah, I'm in it mostly for the visuals. I was SO upset when the first Dune movie ended where it ended because it finally felt like they were getting started on the story, then poof, credits! hahaha

Some might call me a heretic, but I'm liking Ahsoka far better than either Mando or Book of Boba. Especially Boba, that was a disappointment to me. It doesn't hurt that I was already a fan of Rosario Dawson! Also: Thrawn.

Ahsoka has a bit darker story and atmosphere IMHO.

I'm looking forward to it! Hoping to get some time to binge it later this month!

Eh first two EPS of Ahsoka didn't really get things going for me. Acting/pacing was way too slow and deliberate like the whole thing was taking itself way too seriously.

Doing the typical Disney universe thing where I need to watch Rebels and read a book and watch some shorts and see some other series before I understand the starting points for some of these characters.

Mandalorian S1 was great because it was really something fresh in the SW universe: just a simple man trying to make his way in the universe.

Now by S3 it's all disneyfied again with callbacks and flash forwards and intertwined threads and it's more about Bo Katan than Boba Fett like god damn can't we just have a clean narrative Disney?!

That movie should have come out already, fucking greedy studios bumping it back.

I read Dune Messiah, it was a much more cerebral book with a lot about the intricacies of politicking and the behind the scenes stuff of empire-ing.

I guess Denis will focus more on the whole crusades and turn it more action-y

I was just re-watching the final fight scene from Dune Part Two (2024), and one odd point occurred to me: Paul's hair.

To borrow a quote from Fight Club:
"Fight club became the reason to cut your hair short and trim your fingernails"

In the course of the story, Paul has become a seasoned killer. He doesn't have the superhuman fighting abilities that he has in the book or the mini-series, so logically he has been in serious danger during combat on many occasions. Why does he still have boyish 'not a care in the world' hair? I'm not making a statement about what I think masculinity is or anything like that, I'm thinking mainly about the practicality of it. The films do not portray him as vain etc either.

The mini-series marks the course of his transition from boyhood to manhood with a change in haircut from a side parting to a short crew cut, which makes sense for multiple reasons.

I think the recent films could have done more to mark the passage of 'hard years' on a teen born into privilege.

Looks like it's coming to Max soon. First movie I went to see in the theaters twice in forever so I'll probably skip streaming it personally
