Saw about 1/2 of this again on TV the other night. I have to say the overall effect is just god awful. The over the top characters, acting, writing, rock music, sting (I mean WTF Sting !?!). However at the same time the atmosphere in this movies is just brilliant. As far as dark, dreary, gritty, hopeless atmospheres go this is right up there with Blade Runner. Even the parts it gets wrong in this aspect it sort of still gets right like the silly over the top wardrobes, and comical looking spaceships. Gotta love those David Lynch touches. Somehow it all still works atmospherically but fails as a movie. What are you're thoughts on the film?

PS: I have to add I've never read the books. I'll have to give the original book a try sometime but I have the sneaking suspicion it's not my cup of tea.

It was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. To tell you the truth, I didn't even finish watching it.

if you have never read the book, you have no room to critique the movie.

and the over the top characters and such are kind of crucial.

but... that movie took a LOT of liberties. portraying the duke as a "really really good" guy...portraying the baron as a really really bad guy..when in fact they were both just the heads of their respective dueling houses...and the heart plugs? WTF heart plugs? and all the diseases on the baron? yeah...right... he was fat, but not grotesque...

He was so fat he needed suspensors to help him stay up. This was due to a disease in retaliation for the rape that led to Jessica. Otherwise he would have been well built like his nephew and ghola.

The book supports the portrayals though. The Duke generally was a good person, caring more for the spice miners than their machinery, disdaining the rituals that made frivolous waste of water... The baron in the book did kill his lovers, plotted to sacrifice his relatives for his gain, was so fat that he needed machines to hold him up...

I agree with fayd... characters a bit exaggerated but exactly as I pictured them in my mind.

The Baron was the essence of pure evil while Leto was the essence of pure good. It's how the books are written.

The heart plugs was over the top, but maybe it would be something Harkonens would do, if you look at the description of them all over the books, they loved to lord over their people in many ways. Herbert never described the disease as anything more than fat, but who knows.

I thought the movie was great and did a great way of immersing you in the universe. A lot like the original Star Wars in the use of real sets. I think Dune would have been epic fail with CG.

This is one movie where you can't compare it to the book. The amount of depth and inner monologue in the novel would destroy any movie - You'd have to listen to so much more of ol' butt chin talking to himself and wierd images flying across the screen. Some things in the movie don't even happen at all in the book.

Both are great and I'd recommend either to any fan of Sci-Fi. Dune the novel could be well received by anyone with an eye for literature even if they aren't big sci-fi fans.

Having read the books, Dune is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. They utterly massacred just about everything from the novel.

if you've never read the book how do you know what parts they got wrong or right or what the atmosphere is supposed to be like?

I'm a big fan of the books and I liked this movie although I think the mini-series that Sci-Fi did was better.

I'm critiquing it as a work completely separate from the book. Like I said and you agreed I never read the book. Therefore my statements about the atmosphere are entirely about the movie and not the book. Same with the negative comments, entirely about the movie as a piece of film making separate from the book.

What is the source for this information? I thought he was seduced by a Bene Gesserit in order to achieve their breeding scheme. (I've read almost the entire series but only remember Dune.)

edit: Found the info on wiki. It's in the 'Prelude to Dune' series.

Considering you have to be on acid just to make sense of the rest of the books that makes sense =p

I do think that the Butlerian Jihad trilogy would make some damn fine movies if done by a decent studio without Michael Bay.
