You do realize this thread is over a year old right? Anyway, I liked the original movie. I thought it was done well for it's time.

I read the book before I saw the movie so I found the movie enjoyable. Besides, Gurney Halleck was played by one Patrick Stewart.

I didn't know there was more than one movie. I hope the others were better than this one. It started ok, but by the halfway point it felt less like a movie and more of a list of plot bullet points put into movie form. It didn't do a very good job of making me care about the characters or their predicaments. In all, I got the impression that someone picked it up with the hope of making another Star Wars, but it just failed.

I was the exact opposite. I read the book and watched the movie and I was disappointed. I liked the actors, I liked the sets and costumes, I HATED the directing. The movie had terrible flow, some stupid stuff was in there like the intro, and I just couldn't enjoy it. The remake was better overall, even though the costumes and sets weren't always as good. I think a good studio with a good director and a good budget could make an amazing movie, but as someone else stated they should do the Butlerian Jihad instead. James Cameron could pull it off.

Careful all you Dune haters or The Reverend Mother will visit your dreams and you shall feel her gom jabbar.

Big David Lynch fan here. He's a genious.

I saw Dune during its theatrical release in 1984 and both the wifey & I absolutely loved it. What a stellar cast and direction. Such atmosphere! Only thing that really creeped me out was the similarity to Islamic fanaticism and expansion during the 7th-8th century. I hate the jihad aspect. Then again, I supposed that's in the book (which I haven't read yet; only read the novelization of the movie back then).

I own the Extended edition on DVD in its metallic case. The end credits song (Take My Hand) by Toto is one of the most moving pieces ever in my book.

I love the Sci-Fi mini-series (both Dune, and Children of Dune).

One of these days I really need to read the first few books. It's been a story I've been wanting to revisit and to do so with the actual books... just haven't gotten around to it.

And there has been some talk in Hollywood about giving this story a major re-do. Sci-Fi tried, but they had obvious budget issues to overcome. It was really given the best "epic on a tiny budget" effort, and outside of a few visual issues, they did an outstanding job making it feel like it was done right.

But the story really does deserve a major budget multi-film treatment.

I've never read the book and the movie was god awful FAIL. I can't believe I sat through the whole thing. Just horrible on every level. I don't think you could try to make a movie worse.

I saw the movie on TV in the late 80's with a distracting room of family, who weren't really bothered about it although I was trying to take it in. It intrigued me enough, although I probably heard about a third of the story. The SFX seemed cool at the time. When I finished Uni in the 90's I got bored waiting for a response for any job applications to appear and went to the library.

I found and read the three books that they had in under two weeks, I enjoyed it that much. Probably about 3 inches thick each.

I haven't seen the film since, and it probably looks ridiculously dated much like the original Terminator. I'd go with the books.

I just realized this thread is a year old...at least my second response lines up with my first. Probably the only time I've ever been consistent... :awe:

I absolutely LOVE the movie, especially the extended cuts. It's not particularly accurate to the facts of the books, but it's true to their atmosphere, as you allude to. I've tried all the other versions hoping to see a better version, but it never works out. I generally watch it every 2-3 months.

There's no way ANY movie adaptation could accurately portray the books.

90% of the books are all about explaining subtle intonations and the various meanings behind body language and words. You'd literally need to have some narrative voice explaining what the characters are REALLY saying for just about every conversation!

I just finished listening to the Film Sack episode on this movie; makes me want to re-watch it as I have not seen it in years and I remember enjoying it. Pretty sure it just came out on Blu too. :hmm:

I actually just saw this movie 3 days ago. It was interesting to say the least but for some reason it kept me interested. Don't know why but I wanted to finish the movie but I thought it really wasn't a great movie. Also what the hell is with all the whispering thoughts??? Never read the book and never will.

i was thinking recently how awesome an anime adaptation of the dune franchise.. or at least the original book, would be.

it would have the length of time necessary to adequately explore the entirety of the texts and subtexts. plans within plans...

the "Large ham" character types that herbert was so fond of feature EXTREMELY well in anime. voice acting that might have appeared silly and way too over the top in live action appears believable and fitting.

no huge production costs required to create outstanding sets and special effects.

all in all, it's a perfect medium for dune.

really wish they'd had some over the top nude scenes of Paul's mom Francesa Annis

The totality of the series covers nearly 15,000 years of social, technological, and natural progression. It is the best book series ever written, regardless of genre. It doesn't just show Islamic characteristics, it directly talks about it. Religion is a large part of the Dune universe.

Children of Dune was pretty well done, but I disagree on SciFi's remake of Dune. Did you notice that the director apparently took to heart the stylings of the 1960s Batman series when they portrayed the Harkonens as always in red lighting with the camera tilted 45 degrees? It was just pure cheese.

James Cameron or Peter Jackson could probably do the story some amount of justice, but I don't think anyone else could.
