I think HBO missed a trick here with Dune especially now with how GOT is a dead franchise(no spin off will remove the stain of what happened with the main show).

Give Dune the same budget as GOT and you potentially have another masterpiece of entertainment like GOT seasons 1-4. You could absolutely develop a prequal series then follow-up with the book storylines and give it a great ending.

The first Dune book would have been best as a trilogy if it had to be done as a movie, or yes, as a really good high budget HBO series. One season, 10 episodes. Then do spinoffs. Which they are doing (of the Bene Gesserit)

But 2.5 hours x 2 is just not enough to truly capture the book well enough. It's still a gorgeous and fun movie but it's still too condensed. It really helps if you have read the book, your mind fills in stuff well even as it also screams for more content.

I still think the problem is that you can't take the kind of expository internal dialogue that Dune is full of and translate that into movie scenes. It's a fundamental problem that writers face when adapting novels to screenplays. A movie that was faithful to the book would be full of narration and apparently nobody wants that.

My wife & I trade movies (scifi vs. romcoms etc.). I went & saw all the Twilight movies with her. She was really frustrated because she said the books were better & made me read them (well, I did the audiobooks on my commute, haha). The book version actually WAS pretty good! Lots of expository internal dialogue, plus some fun concepts outside of other vampire movies, like "vegan vampires" who don't eat humans, but eat animals instead for their blood, and their eyes are a different color as a result.

Dune is definitely that way. In the books, you're on the journey with Paul. In the movies, you're an observer with Paul. The new movie feels VERY different from the book. Whereas with other stuff, like the original X-men live-action movies, I feel like they did a pretty good job capturing the spirit & vibe of the comics.

I'm completely new to Dune, but watching the movie it kinda feels like a ripoff of Star Wars. I mean, you're on a desert planet like Tattooine with people advanced enough to travel through interstellar space but still fight with swords for some reason.

The main character is also a young boy learning to control his mind control powers (like Luke Skywalker) that seem awfully like The Force. I mean, it even has an Emperor ruling the galaxy. I'm waiting for a Yoda like character to show up and start training this kid to defeat the Emperor in the sequel

Dune came out in the 60's. Lucas came up with star wars in 1971.

Dune was published in 1965.

Yeah Star Wars ripped off Dune pretty hard. Smart move by Lucas.

Dune is much older than Star Wars. Published in 1965.

I liked the sandworm, anyway... although Star Wars had one of those as well.

I saw that the original Dune novel came out in the 60's, though. I guess that means that Star Wars ripped Dune off and not the other way around.
I’m with you in a lot of ways. Dune is a very complicated story and I see your point about Star Wars similarities. Dune is something you have to put effort into understanding

Deserts make for easy alien landscapes for movie makers as they don’t have obvious terrestrial plants to break the alien mood and fix scale.

I watched the movie and I really liked it. I read the first book when I was in high school though and saw the first movie in the 1980s when it was released so I went in already knowing the story.

If you don't focus on the political stuff too much, the book is awesome & far deeper than the movie. Probably my favorite sci-fi book of all time tbh.

wasn't Star Wars pretty much a space version of the Kurosawa film The Hidden Fortress? I think Lucas even has said as much.

He did and I watched that movie years ago. Shitty movie and I barely saw a resemblance but I think I fell asleep while it was playing.

Weapon Of Choice 2010 Lyrics

Come forward and get your teeth smoked, word
Come forward and get your teeth smoked, word
Come forward and get your teeth smoked, word
Come forward and get your
Come forward and get your
Come forward and get your
Come forward and get your
Come forward and get your

(Spiral Music)

Don't be shocked by tone of my voice
Check out my new weapon, weapon of choice
Don't be shocked by tone of my voice

Check out my new weapon, weapon of choice yeah

Listen to the sound of my voice
You can check it on out, it's the weapon of choice yeah
Don't be shocked by tone of my voice (aah...)
It's the new weapon, the weapon of choice yeah

You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
Or you can blow wit' us

You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit'

(Spiral Music)

Walk without rhythm, it won't attract the worm
Walk without rhythm, and it won't attract the worm
Walk without rhythm, and it won't attract the worm

If you walk without rhythm, huh, you'll never learn

Don't be shocked by the tone of my voice
Check out my new weapon, weapon of choice
Don't be shocked by the tone of my voice
Check out my new weapon, weapon of choice

Be careful, we don't know them
Be careful, we don't know them
Be careful, we don't know them

You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
Or you can blow wit' us

You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit'

(Spiral Music)

Organically grown
Through the hemisphere I roam
To make love to the angels of life, yeah and my girl
I guess you just don't understand
It's gone beyond being a man
As I drift off into the night
I'm in flight
She's a boy's scoundrel gal
But I'm gonna hold my cool
Cause the music rules
Yeah, so move on baby, yeah

Halfway between the gutter and the stars
Yeah
Halfway between the gutter and the stars
Yeah

You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
Or you can blow wit' us

You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit' this
Or you can blow wit' that
You can blow wit'

(longer spiral music)

I just watched the first Dune movie. I thought it hit the nail on the head for the main themes of the story (ie. politics, religion being used to manipulate the masses).

What I think it missed (though it might make up for it in the second film) is charismatic characters. The film is very dry (no puns intended). For example, I think Gurney Halleck's lines from the mini-series about how he was rescued by his Duke from the Harkonnen slave pits and trained as warmaster helped give more information about why the Harkonnens are an evil lot and more character history to chew on. I also liked the mini-series bit when Feyd tells the Baron that two key people are dead and the Baron queries "you've seen the bodies?". I think Ian McNiece's portrayal of the Baron was more expressive. Come to think of it, I want to watch the mini series again!

To be explicit I absolutely hate it when Hollywood feels the need to provide unnecessary comic relief (e.g. Gimli in PJ's LOTR trilogy), but Dune needed something to like the protagonist characters for a bit more.

One thing that irritated me a bit was the Bane'efying of the Baron's voice. Please, I want to be able to hear what the characters say, I don't want to have to re-watch the film with subtitles.

I was really worried that Villeneuve was going to serve up an all-style-no-substance movie like BR 2049, but I'm pleased to say that Dune 2021 wasn't that.
