I think you're being a bit harsh on DKII though. I actually don't remember that 800x600 thing, its of course been awhile but I was pretty sure I always ran it at 1024x768. Its possible that was addressed in the later patches? There were fewer units, but I think at least a few more were added in the later patch. I did sincerely miss some of the units from DK though. The demon spawn -> dragon was the main one. In later levels of DK I always made it a point to have a large group of dragons. They couldn't do much damage, but with their heal spell they could hold almost any super buffed heroes at bay forever while warlocks and myself pelted them with spells. DKII really does have to many human "monsters".
I don't remember that single job thing actually. It was pretty funny in DK when early on you'd need evil eye really badly (to avoid breaking accidentally into a potential heroes nest while hedgehogging) so I'd load my library up with beetles, flies or whatever other crap creature had wondered into my dungeon to get the spell.
I didn't like the casino in DKII, because I'm too cheap to pay out. The combat pit mechanic seemed to clunky and micromanagement intensive for me...one of Dungeon Keepers greatest strengths was that its AI would keep the dungeon running and do micro shit like that automatically unless told to do otherwise.
I do disagree with you on the traps though. That was deficient in DK, despite those being a big fixture of "dungeons" and I greatly appreciated the expanded workshop. I loved building elaborate trap setups. And the boulder trap? Don't tell me you didn't ever use that to beat an impossible army of heroes! (Setup a boulder trap, draw heroes into a long corridor you build, set it off...squash 'em all.
I still have it.
I play it at least once a year (up to the last level or 2nd to last).
It runs at max 800x600.
Unless there is a "Special" patch I dont know about. But I always dig around for stuff like that every time I install it.
Like I said, I did find the registry entry for the game. It will let you enable other resolutions like 1024x768, 1280 and 1600 but they get all messed up when you try to run the game.
Let me reinstall it and maybe I can do some screenshots with FRAPS or something.
EDIT:
Its nice to play a game without a fuckin security code.
Anyway, without patches the thing only runs a 400x300, 512x384, 640x480 and 800x600.
This is the first time I played it on my Radeon 4870 and I cant see the 3D backround on the menu screen. CANT SEE ANYTHING IN GAME!
Crap.
Will install patches and let you know what happens.
EDIT 2:
Ok with patch 1.7 I can see 3D stuff in game. Home menu is still black. I had to guess where stuff was on the map, which means I probably wont be able to access the secret levels when I unlock them.
Enabled all the custom resolutions in the registry.
1024x768 is working OK, but there are buttloads of artifacts & stuff all over the place.
Will try higher resolutions as I feel safe.
Game crashed when I tried to open the Objectives window. Will try again at lower res.
EDIT again:
When it crashed it left the process running in the backround. Could not kill it.
Had to restart.
FINAL EDIT:
It wont run at all now. Every time I start it I get the standard crash dialog and request to send info to Microsoft about it.
Tried registry settings to get it back to 800x600 and disabled all the higher resolutions again.
Just does not want to run now. Something bad happened when it crashed the first time and now its screwed.
Did try using the Compatibility Mode but that didnt help (which wasnt a suprise).
Bummer. Fun game dead.
Nothing better to look forward to.
Guess I'll go back to Deus Ex.
