Many moons ago, they were good when they made the donuts in the store. Then they started having them made in a regional shop and sent to the stores. Then they started to sell them in gas stations, which is the kiss of death. Also, I've tried their dark roast, and it really sucks. But then all fast food sucks, so what's the big deal?

Most of them where I live are made in a factory and shipped to store. But ya, as a kid they were awesome when made in store.

To be honest, I'd rather get hostess donuts.

If donut sales have gone down due to health concerns it may no longer be economical to make things fresh in the stores. Also price competition may be forcing them to cut costs.

they've always sucked afaik them to exist.

Krispy Kreme roflstomps Dunkin Donuts unfrozen horsecrap.
Agreed. On a 1 to 10 doughnut scale, Dunkin Donuts are about a 2. Krispy Kreme are about a 3. And they also sell Krispy Kreme in gas stations in the area.

edit: "Timmy Ho's" are about a 2 as well. If it weren't for pretentious hipsters thinking they were cool and trendy by exclaiming "Timmy Ho's," people might judge them for the quality of their doughnuts, which is pretty low.

2 or 3 of the local grocery stores make them fresh every morning, and they're awesome. One grocery store about 35 minutes away makes the absolute best of 2 or 3 types of doughnuts I've ever tried. And for plain, glazed donuts, the local Amish bakers make some incredible donuts.

DD does it for mostly economic and real estate reasons. They can force in a retail presence into tiny footprint and still provide counter and dining space by cutting out the the cooking part of the business. Plus there is less maintenance and the overhead of putting in a giant commissary to support regional distribution is much cheaper than a couple dozen independent stores doing their own thing.
