Duron 1200/1300 vs Thunderbird 1200/1333

which is the better processor to put in my old ECS K7VZA motherboard to upgrade my fathers PC? (a p 166, wow) Its new slower technlogy vs faster older technology....what do you think? if duron, will i need to upgrade the bios?

Depends on what your dad does, but probably a Duron. As far as the BIOS goes, what version do you have? Check the manufacture's website to compare what your version supports vs. what the updated BIOS version does.

Unless the board doesn't support the Athlon (which I really doubt), the 1333 would be much faster. Those only came in the 133 mhz bus version, and the t-bird is faster than the Duron anyway. I have both. Get the t-bird at any speed. The local shop here only has the 1.4c available (133 bus).

Athlon is faster, because:

(1) You can run your memory at 133 MHz with Athlon, and only at 100 MHz with Duron.
(2) Duron has a castrated cache.

cmon....duron is low-end (like celeron).........athlon tbird is high end (well use to be).........its not rocket science.

nope...new durons (1 GHz and up) have a fsb of 133 MHz

Well the new Duron 1100 is faster than the P III 1.13 Tul. according to Toms Hardware.....the Thunderbird is old technology now.....but I was just wondering if it still is much faster

yeah never mind, i thought the Duron was 133 MHz fsb, that made me question the speed. the computer will be used mostly for business apps and internet.

That said, the new duron (morgan core) has SSE support, so under certain applications it can be better than the t-bird.

The duron has the advantage of running cooler so if noise is a factor that will come into effect.
Also, the duron is probably cheaper so if it's only used for office and internet, get the Duron.
