duron 1ghz vs. athlon 900?

I'm looking into building a really cheap but decent system to upgrade from my current Athlon 500 (the first Athlons). Which one would you suggest that I buy? Which one performs better? I intend to use a cheaper mobo, nothing top of the line. I don't plan on doing any overclocking. I'll be buying a new processor, mobo, and ram.

By the way, will a 300 watt power supply have any problems with any of the above processors? The computer will just have standard stuff - 1 hard drive, dvd, and maybe a cdrw.

dunno about the chips but I can tell you that if you have a good quality ps you should be ok.

My Set up:

AK31A
XP1600+@1.52ghz
256MB DDR
40gig HD
2 MP7040a CDRW's
SB Live!
Ti200

All running in a Fong-Kai 603 case with 4 fans total(2@80mm/ 1 CPUfan@6800rpm/ 1 small one on the chipset) and a 300 watt PS
powering it all and no problems yet.

The performance is aproximately the same for the 2 CPU. The bigger cache on the Athlon compensates for the 100Mhz lower clock.
I used an 750@936 Duron and now an Athlon 1.0@1.1. The difference is very dim between the 2...

I use 300w PS in my system now. My brother got the Duron and it runs it at 850 using an 200W PS. He has an Geforce2 and 1 CDROM in there. Fortunately it's very stable but I told him to upgrade the PS just to be on the safe side.

Getting a 300W PS will be more than enough for your needs.

Also use a low profile FAN on your cooler. Globalwin FOP68 or better WBK68. It has a 60x60x10, 4800RPM FAN that is bearable. I ran it at 3600

Cheers,

Both r about the same but it really depends on what application u r running. Games & video editing for example would benefits from the CPU w/ larger cache (Athlon) than the Duron.

I would go for the morgan 1 Ghz thou. Runs cooler, more efficient core & SSE. O/Cing is not bad as well.

I actually intend to use it for nothing but games. I have another computer that I use for everything else. I'm looking at either a 900-1ghz Athlon or 1 ghz Duron.

What's SSE? Is that not in the 900-1ghz Athlons?

Do Durons work with all types of DDR ram?

SSE is an instruction set that is in the P3, P4 and Celeron. Only the Duron 1 ghz or faster and the AthlonXP have SSE. The previous Durons and T-Birds dont. The Durons work with all types of ram. But if you want to get the most of your Athlon or Duron. Look into get a board with the KT266a chipset and DDR ram.

Well I was in the same position as you yesterday and then plumped for a Duron 1Ghz from Newegg for $54 shipped

I'm hoping for a 1.2Ghz running speed

Heck, I just upgraded a friends system with a 1ghz Duron (I am assuming its a Morgan core, because of the different bridge arrangement and the nice TRENCH cut across the L1 bridge).

I was so pleasantly surprised when the generic heatsink was keeping it (unoverclocked) at 37-40C in bios and less than 50C at full load. Must of been a morgan core. It sure didn't seem very slow to me................. I didn't bench it yet, but I will.

The Thunderbird core usually performs equally to a Duron ((Spitfire) of 100MHz higher clock, but as this Duron is based on the Morgan core the performance that should be enough to give the Duron 1GHz a small performance advantage..
The Duron also has the advantage of having SSE, and hardware prefatching among the other advantages inherent in the Morgan/Palomino core.

So in the end I'd go with the Duron 1GHz, if it was based around the older Spitfire core they would perform almost identically so it would be a hard choice. But as the 1GHz Duron boasts the higher performing Morgan core it should be able to cut down the typical 100MHz gap between Duron/Athlon enough to give the Duron 1GHz a small edge.

Thanks for the help all. Are all 1 ghz Durons based on the Morgan core?

What's a good, cheap hsf that I should use with it? Remember, CHEAP

The Morgan core durons will hit 1.2 easily! I just put in a 1g duron in place of my 800 athlon. The L1 bridges are cut the same as the spitfire/t-bird cores, but a little harder to close because there are 5 bridges instead of 4 and they seem a little closer together.

defogger paint works fine, and 1.2 will run at default voltage(1.75) but will not be as stable as running at 1.8v. My duron seems to top out at 1.2, as anything higher and it is very unstable.

Yes all 1ghz durons are based on the morgan core. Cheap heatsinks are thermaltake vocano series (5, 6, 6cu+) and cooler master hsf (they are all under $15 at newegg). I would go with thermaltake although they're a couple of bucks more than the cooler master's. You need to use a screwdriver to install and de-install the thermaltake hsf.

With some generic fairly quiet heatsink (had a thick fan like a delta but only ran 5800rpm) I bumped the FSB of my friends to 110 and it only went up a degree to two at stock voltage and felt really stable. (Didn't thoroughly Prime95 it yet) But for what they do (basic gaming and internet and the normal home stuff.) it was a nice little bonus from that nice morgan core. I would like to have one to try in my watercooled system. I would like to see where it tops out at.

..............edit.............
It was the heatsink they give away with the mwave combo's. Maybe someone knows what it is. I am interested because it gave decent temps and is probably dirt cheap somewhere..........
