Duron at 133MHz FSB?

What are the chances that I can run my wife's Duron 850MHz at 133MHz FSB? I have a large copper Coolermaster HSF on it. The chip is installed in an MSI K7T266Pro2-RU (KT266A/8233) with a stick of 256MB Samsung/Samsung PC2100. OS is WinXP Home SP1.

I think he is talking about overclocking the chip... 8.5 multi x 100MHz FSB = 850MHz CPU. 8.5 x 133 = 1133MHz, that would be a decent performance boost. The Duron might be able to handle it, just slowly bump up your FSB until you hit a wall and can find no other alternate path to a higher peak.

Your statement is misleading because it dpends on the situation. If he unlocks the multiplier he can run the FSB at 133, 166 or even 200Mhz. It only depends on the chipset in the motherboard. If you do not want to overclock you could run it at 6.5*133= 865MHzs.

I have a Duron 1.0GHz that runs at 1.33GHz at stock voltage on my K7S5A, using a cheapie GC-68 with a Panaflo L1A on it. May you have the same success

You may be able to do it if you unlock the processor to lower the mulitplier, but otherwise it's doubtful that the Spitfire based Duron will run that well beoynd 1GHz. Most I can reach while maintaing stability on my Duron 1200 (locked) on my MSI K7T266Pro2-A (KT266A) is like 115MHz for the FSB.

Cheers

Hi Tao!

you will have to unlock that duron to make it run at 133fsb. if I recall the 850's are not good overclockers ( maybe to 1ghz max). close those l1's with a pencil, or defogger kit and you will be good to go

Thanks for the tips guys. I will do the old pencil trick on that Duron and get some bandwidth for the wife.

My brothers Duron 800 will only run upto the high 800s!
,still at 6.5x133=866 it gave a nice performance boost ,knocked SETI Work Unit times down from 8.5 to 7hrs.

And yeah the Duron Spitfires (950 downwards) are very unlikely to go much above 1GHz if at all

I have set a few 200FSB Tbirds to 266FSB. Some did it with only a simple unlocking via the L1's. Others were more troublesome. The explanation I read went something like this:
A 700MHz Tbird uses a 7x multiplier and a 100MHz bus. If you set it to 133MHz, the proc will try to boot at 933MHz. If it can't handle that, the system will freeze before the BIOS or jumper settings for a lower multiplier are initialized. If this happens, you may need to slice and connect some of the L4 and L5 bridges to change the multiplier on the CPU itself. I had a 900MHz Tbird like that - it would try to boot at 1.2GHz (9x133) and it just couldn't do it. I made changes to the L1, L4, and L5 bridges, so that it'd be unlocked, with a 6.5x multiplier. That way, it'd boot at 866MHz (6.5x133), and I could set new multipliers in BIOS. I think it only was able to do 933Mhz (7x133) reliably.

My Duron 950 was able to get to 1.5GHz

With massive cooling: 150x10 @ 1.75V

Amazing overclock!:Q ,I take it your 950 was one of the rare Morgan versions to get 1.5GHz?

That issue only occured with certain mbrds ,if I remember rightly it happened with any mbrd that had a jumper for 100/133MHz FSB.

Manage to get a Duron 1.2@1.33 w/133 bus. Unlocked the chip with a pencil, believe me take your time when doing this bit

Pencil will work for a while ,but for long term reliability you really need to use conductive paint.

You can also put a piece of clear tape over the pencil to help it last

This makes perfect sense to me, and explains why I haven't been able to get my 1.3ghz Duron to POST at 150+mhz FSB, even with my new Nforce2 and the BIOS multiplier set to like 3x.

So does anyone have a link to pics of what I need to set the bridges to on my 1.3 Duron?

No chipset/mbrd can unlock the multipliers of locked Durons & Athlon Pals

Your setting to x3 would of had no effect.
You need to join across the L1 bridges ,preferably using conductive paint.

Look here & select unlock in the bottom drop down menu.
Note ,because you have a Duron there are no pits to fill

I've got my brothers Duron 800 at 6x133 unlocking the L1s (his new Duron 1200 is next)

Is a Duron at 133MHz FSB at close to the same final MHz a big improvement over a Duron at 100MHz FSB? please say yes, please say yes

Err ,yes......................well,a modest improvement, though it depends on the application ,it'll show a noticeable improvment on anything thats memory intensive e.g.Quake3,SETI(use of rather than size). As well as a higher FSB between CPU to chipset running synch'ed FSB/RAM speeds reduces latency.

As an example on my brothers Duron 800 on 100MHz FSB did SETI Work Units in about 8.5hrs ,at 133MHz FSB it takes about 8hrs ,a 6% speed up ,not bad for a 0% clock speed increase
