AMD confirms Applebred launch
By Tony Smith
Posted: 20/08/2003 at 11:04 GMT

AMD has confirmed the existence of the Applebred processor, and said that the Duron-branded core has already begun shipping.

As we reported yesterday, Applebred - not, as we wrote, 'Appalbred', which was how Babelfish translated the original Russian report on the chip - is a low-end part equipped with just 64KB of on-die L2 cache and, as we guessed, a 266MHz frontside bus.

The chip will be offered at 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8GHz, AMD European marketing chief, Richard Baker, told The Register today.

"We're aiming the part at certain markets, such as South America and Eastern Europe, where customers have asked us to extend the Duron line," said Baker.

Essentially, the chips will be targeted at the world's less wealthy nations where price is more important that performance. In the US, Europe and the Far East, where AMD is perceived as a provider of high-performance processors, the Duron range has been less successful than AMD's supporters might expect. However, in territories where having the latest, fastest systems is much less important, the Duron family has proved more popular than it is over here. Hence the need to maintain the line using the new core.

Baker said the three Applebred chips would not be explicitly offered in more mature PC markets, but if customers want them, they can have them.

AMD roadmaps have for some time signalled the demise of the Duron brand, replacing future chips in the family with the message 'according to market demand'. Clearly, that means some territories rather than others. ®

You don't believe this story do you? I sure as hell don't. The Register is NOT on my list of trusted journalist sites.

The fact that an AMD processor uses the letters, A P P L E, in its name is enough to pose a potential lawsuit from another computer company. A name really couldn't be much worse. I'd like to see another source information for this though.

I just did a search of the entire AMD site and there is no trace of the word "applebred" to be found.

If they cant buy a 1700+ how do you expect them to buy the rest of the parts for a computer?

How about Xbit labs
Isn't X-bit the Icrontic of Russia? Nope, still not good enough for me. When I can find "applebred" on the AMD website I'll believe it.

The code name comes from a cross between the appaloosa and the thoroughbred. Nothing to do with Apple per se.
I've heard the chip sells for (or costs) about $25 and is targeted at 2nd and 3rd world countries that can't afford much else.
This is nothing you guys would really be interested in other than a real cheap computer.

Here's another article on it. Shame on you guys for doubting the mighty register! haha

Why don't they call it Bthlon or something... (Athlon MX anyone?)
I initially thought this was a joke...

I agree.

And where is all this "I-don't-trust-The-Inquirer" stuff coming from? I read The Inq all the time and the reports almost always end up coming true in the end (point in case: Thorntons and 333MHz-bus AthlonXP's, to name just two).

If you don't want to read anything that hasn't been formally announced in a press release, then you can always stick with CNet or something but I like hearing the "mole report" too.

Sometimes the National Enquirer is right too but are they a credible news source? Not unless you are a MIB.
