Hello,

My Duron 650 just arrived today. I'm putting it up with my Abit KT7-RAID and Fong Kia Case. I heard something about soddering the L1 bridges and such but I'm not sure. Question is, where do I start? What heatsinks to get? Stock heatsink any good? Should I use thermal compound stead of that adhsive sticker it came with?

Thanks alot

Hi the first place to start is to look at the L1 bridges. They are probably cut. If they are take a mechanical pencil and color them in. This will unlock the cpu. Then go into the bios and you can set the speed at whatever you want. I would reccommend that you start at 600 then go up 100mhz at a time. Most of the cpus will top out at 850-950mhz. Some will do 1000mhz but it is a very small number. Also the hsf that comes with it is not very good. The best is the alpha pal6035 and the next best is a global win. Try www.pcnut.com or www.cputester.com

PUT DOWN THE SODDERRING GUN, AND STEP AWAY FROM THE DURON...

hehe, anyway.. a #2 pencil, or a mechanical mencil with #2 led will do the trick. Dont be cheap with the pencil either, put a good amount of led on the L1 bridges. You basically trying to put enough graphite on the bridges to keep them closed.

The thermal grease is better under normal and heavy load then that thermal tape. I personally use Arctic silver.

Dravic hit it on the nose. The pencil trick works wonders and you can't beat a PAL-6035 and Arctic silver. If you don't mind a little noise, get the Delta fan.

Question...I have basically the same setup:

Duron 700
Abit KT7 RAID

2 questions...

1) is it only the l1 bridges that need to be connected, or do L6, L3, L4 (Multiplier bridges) and L7 (Voltage bridges) also need to be tweaked, as detailed on Tomshardware.com (Link)

2) I connected all the L1 bridges so it looks like this: |||||.
I then connected the L7 bridges for 1.800v so it looks like this: |||:|.
Then I went into the bios and set the multiplier at 8.0x and FSB to 103 just as a test. However when it reboots after I exit the bios seems to still detect the Duron as a 700, even though the 8.0x multiplier still remains within the Softmenu III

leave the other bridges alone.

get a #2 HB LEAD . HB is important. Better yet get a mechanical pencil, and HB SUPER FINE LEAD.

erase what you did your school pencil, and do it over again.

when you do that it will work.

cost $1.00 maybe?

Yeah...what he said. Most likely your connections are not complete. Get a good, fine mechanical pencil and maybe even a magnifying glass and connect the dot on the L1 bridges only. Don't be afraid to make your connections wider than the bridges, just don't connect adjacent ones. I found that thebest way was to put the chip on my desk with a good strong light and the bridges facing me and color them in... blow off the excess graphite, and check it out with the magnifying glass. Leave the voltage bridges alone, you can set your voltage in BIOS. Good luck.

Thanks fellas.

Now if the overclock is successful, will the post display say I have a Duron 900 for example or will it still think it's a Duron 700 even though it's oc'ed and running at 900?
