Duron V. T-Bird

Hi.. I'm thinking about trading my Duron650@1030 + $50 with another member of this board for a Thunderbird 900@1000.

How much better is the Tbird than the Duron? Will I notice any increase in speed?

I just want to make sure it won't be slower.. because of the 30mhz difference..

Any input would be appreciated.

I can't remember exactly where, but some tech site (of the 5 thousand, right?) did benchmarks on duron's and tbirds at identical clock speeds spanning from 600-1ghz. Consistently, it took a duron of +100 mhz to equal the framerates/benchmarks of the tbird. So for all practical purposes, a duron of 1030 should be slower than a tbird of 1000. However, before trading with this guy, should you decide to, you might want to find out what his cooling solution is, to make sure you can run his tbird at the same speed he can.

yeah that'll do it, although the other one i saw had OC'd durons up to 1ghz compared as well

id keep the duron. ur giving up 50 for not a really good reason. just stick with it for a while then wait till something faster comes along. like 1.6 gigz...unless ur itching for the speed ie u do a lot of video editing or graphix designs..but besides that..not too much of a real world difference. Duron is about 5%-7% slower then the tbird...so about 50 mhz...

According to the benches shown in the review Technonut posted a T-Bird roughly equals a Duron clocked 100-200 MHz higher in most of the tests.
No doubt it's faster, but is it worth $50 ? My Duron @900 seems plenty fast,even if is corresponds to a T-Bird running a measly 700 MHz

It's not worth it Chris. You've got great price / performance.
You just got the chip and you know it works well on your system.

I have not noticed any difference without benchmarks since I hit 850 a long time ago and running at 1200 and 1400 now, also had a duron at 950 at one time and it seemed no different to me than the others.

Upgraded the wifes from 800 to 1200 and she would not have known the difference if I had not told her.

umm i dont think so buddy. if there was that much of a difference then the durons would completely suck. there is maybe a 5 to 7% drop in speed, which is relatively around 50 to 60MHz, not freaking 100 - 200.
