You can do basically the same thing DVD X COPY does with DVD Decrypter and IfoEdit. And they're both free, not $100.

exactly. They burn layer 1, burn layer 2, then smash'em together. Some how I don't see DVD-9 in consumer form unless the tech behind it changes.
