DVD audio question

When I play dvd's on my computer, the sound is low and not of very good quality, I have a soundblaster live value, when i play regular games like quake 3 and unreal, the sound is perfectly fine, but when i play dvd's the sound is too low and horrible,
any suggestions ?

dvd audio is decoded by software, it has nothing to do with your dvd rom drive Quality varies with different decoders.. the best being intervideo windvd 2.3, it even decodes the subwoofer channel Powerdvd is ok, but a little behind and without the lfe channel Anything else is highly questionable. What speakers do you have? Also realize that the sound level of dvd is lower to allow for more range/quality So if you have weak speakers .. low volumes are gonna screw you

I'm using Cinemaster 99 with windows millenium edition, also Radio shack speakers. The speakers are supposed to be the best they sell.
Maybe I should try a different software instead of Cinemaster ?

i think it might be radio shacks "best speakers", personally i have heard better audio out of a sea shell. i use a crappy set of speakers too and i can hear lots of background noise and squeaks...but i also was using onboard sound at the time too

wholly cow you have two big strikes against you If i assume that your speakers aren't total losses then its definetly your software. Cinemaster is pretty much dead now

That's a common complaint when not using a full range system, particularly lacking a center speaker. A couple things you can try that do not require spending any moolah is get DVD Genie and use it to try different audio settings in Cinemaster, namely: compression, dynamic range and dialog normaliztion. Secondly, when playing a DVD that has the option play the stereo or surround track instead of the six channel one.
