DVD burner nec 2500a

I have had my NEC 2500a forever now and it seems i cannot find media to work on it lately. I just bought some TDK 16x from radio shack and they wont even read as a dvd.

I have had problems with this drive for the last year or so, due to the media support. Most 16x or 8x media only burn 4x on this 8x burner.

Does anyone know a firmware i should flash for new media support or do i have to buy a new drive? This is pretty ridiculous that this $150 drive no longer has updated media support from the manufacture. Even if drives are only $30 now its still a price i dont want to pay.


Anyways any ideas on the firmware?

you musta bought it way early, i got mine for 80ish and that was years ago. and was using the newest hacked firmware so that wasn't the prob.
mine just died recently as well. it seemed like a media support problem at first, but it was just the drive dying. rejected disc types it used to do just fine with
ah well, plenty of cheap after rebate drives these days.

I went through the same thing with my 3500a last fall (at least I think that was the model number; it was an NEC)...firmware upgrades didn't help; I just bit the bullet and bought a new $40 DVD burner (Lite-On) and I've had no problems since

yeah i got it for my birthday from a friend i think she paid around 150 i dunno ... she got it at newegg though. It had just came out.


anyways crap no good firmware huh .... i guess i will look for a nice sata drive.

of 5 nec drives i've had 2 that died. i won't buy another.

Yep, both my brother and I had our NEC DVD burners die within the same year. Reminds me of the infamous IBM Deathstar hard drives

I certainly don't plan on buying another NEC either.

yea but how long did you have them? i've pretty much had burners from every brand die eventually... not scientific obviously because none of us can buy enough drives to really have a great idea. i guess its like harddrives, they do all die eventually.

bringing this tread back to life i finally fixed this issue... by using the unmodified firmware from nec's website .... all the hacked firmwares sucked cause they are so old.

that's good. why did you use hacked firmware? what advantages did it give you?

anyway, i have a different problem: my drive is a Sony DW-Q30A which is actually an OEM Lite-On drive. i don't have aproblem with the drive, but there is no mention of it on sony's site and it was really difficult to find newer firmware for it.

My NEC ND1300A drive has trouble reading discs that it has just burned, it simply doesn't recognize them. Yet those discs read easily in my Benq DW1620, as do discs burned in it, the NEC will read them fine. Go figure. I've burned a lot of discs with the NEC, though, so I figure it's just old age.
