I've dispensed a handful of Samsungs over the past few months. Users are happy, the drives are quiet, no deaths so far.
I'm currently waiting for the new "182" model, not for the 18x DVD burn speed (up from 16x), but for the drastically improved DVD-RAM speed (12x, up from 5x).

I think the 182 model is available at Newegg...unfortunately it doesn't have Lightscribe.

There's a 182D w/o Lightscribe and a 182M that does have it. Same for the 162 btw.

ok, the 182M is not on newegg then.

What do you think of the BENQ DW1655?

To tell you the truth, you could pick up any of the DVD burners that newegg has on their front page on any given day and it should to the job great. And they are usually great deals.

I found looking at some of the reviews of DVD burners at CDRlabs.com to be helpful, but I'm still having trouble choosing between these lightscribe drives:
Liteon, Samsung & Benq

I have 4 active DVD burners. 3 Plexies and an HP - all external. One is Lightscribe. Contrary to biased opinions, it is now the most used one of the lot. The result is professional and something you can give to a client or customer with a bit of pride. Sharpies are OK for your own use - but, they reek of amateurism, and when you are searching through hundreds of disks, they are not easy to read unless you are blessed with draftsman quality printing.

I am thinking of adding another external Lightscribe to the mix - and the one that impresses me most presently is the LaCie DVD/RW, dual layer w/LS.

I can't comment since I've never used any BENQ drive at all.

The 182M is fresh out, just now starting to appear in catalogues. Just wait a week, and it should be there.

To the poster who says that lightscribe is ultimately useless....try giving someone their wedding video dvd disc labeled with a permanent marker. I want it to look professional, but thanks for your recommendation for the NEC nonetheless.

well,
I don't really see how lightscribe is professional. it's definitly "cool"
it's more like whooo,, the new toy, that not EVERYONE has. "YET"
I guess some might associate that with professional.
When I do a job "cutting/remaster", I usually just give them a disk that's just clear on both sides "some what elegent i guess" and a nicely printed cover for the dvd case.

It's elegant until you have five of those out of their cases and try to figure out what's what.

Lightscribe is an easy and cheap method to get a decent looking label onto the disk itself. You don't /have/ to use it on every disk ... but it's the sensible thing to do for disks you give to others.

Ok, can we get back on topic as to which lightscribe DVD burner I should get.
I'm thinking either the Lite-on or the Benq.

Out of the usual cheap choices of benq/liteon/NEC/etc, which one is quiet when playing DVDs?
The benq 1640 is noisy as heck when I use the skip/ff function. It spins up to 40x and stays there.

Do you care enough about DVD-RAM speed to wait for the 182L? No? Get the 162L then.

litescribe is slow and the media is expensive. The nec is a good one and plextor is only worth it if you burn 2-3 cd's a day. I considered one (716a) and decided that the $100 could be better spent by getting the nec and an extra gb of RAM. Permenant marker is fine or you can uses labels, that's what I sometimes do... like $1 for a 10pack.
