I can't figure-out how to make my DVD/CD burner to work. It's worked in the past but I have reinstalled windows XP recently and I think that I need to reinstall the driver somehow. I got this message when trying to use the burner:

"There are no supported recoders available. Make sure that your recorder is powered on and that all cables are properly connected. Also, make sure that the latest version of the software is installed to ensure you have the latest drivers."

SAMSUNG DVD Burner Black IDE Model TS-H552B/WBCH - OEM

Thanks so much!

Check IDE cable

Go to the control panel and see if there are any bangs or errors listed for the burner. If it is listed, try uninstalling it and rebooting allowing the OS to re-detect it.

if you have re-installed XP then do a complete re-install of the software for burning including any updates from windows update and the provider of the software such as roxio and nero. Had this problem myself was fine after all updates

does it detect in bios during boot? does it copy files in windows? accessible in windows? try on another pc? try another cable?

burners do fail after a while. my last one just stopped burning, still read discs fine oddly enough.

I tried the ASPI layer thing-no luck. But I have now realized that neither my DVD/CD-burner drive nor my DVD drive will even read CD or DVD's! How is this possible when they still open up when I push the open/close buttons????? What in the world is wrong here? Just call me computer illiterate...

I'm having the same problem: both DVD and CD burners will neither read nor write, even after uninstalling them and with XP reporting, after reinstalling them, that they are functioning perfectly. Maddening!

what program are you using to burn with?
do the drives show up in my computer?
is there more than 1 drive?

when your computer is starting.. try hitting the del key.. this should bring you into the bios.. they should show up there.. your computer might use f1 or f2 or tab to get into bios also.. i don't know what you have..

the more details i get, the better i can help..

I've tried a bunch of different burning programs, but the drives never even recognize that there is a CD in either drive (the drives won't read any CD's or DVD's for that matter)

The drives show-up on the my computer (the actual drives also open-up when I hit the open-close buttons)

I have two drives:

ASUS Black IDE DVD-ROM Drive Model DVD-E616P2 - Retail
SAMSUNG DVD Burner Black IDE Model TS-H552B/WBCH - OEM

OnceI get to this "bios" thing what is it that I'm supposed to do? How do I reinstall the drives then?? Thanks so much!

Ok, no need to put BIOS into quotes, it is one of the oldest and simplest components in the computer. It stands for Basic Input Output System, and it is, for lack of a better term, a repository or control center for all the other components in the system.

Within the BIOS, you should try to navigate (using the arrows keys usually) to where the hardware settings are listed. Once there, see if your optical drive is listed. If it is not, open up the machine and make sure the cable running from teh motherboard to the optical drive is fully plugged in on both ends.

The reason teh drive can still eject is because that process is controlled by the optical drive and not the OS. Although the OS can eject the drive, it can be directly controlled by the optical drive.

If it is not reading any discs than I would say that the cable is bad. Most every drive should, if not burn discs, then should absolutely be able to read discs, that is the simplest of functions.

In order to check if Windows itself can see the drive, then go to Control Panel, switch it to Classic View (Since I cannot navigate Simple View by memory) and then go to System. Alternatively, you can right click on the 'my Computer' icon on the desktop (if it is there) and go to 'properties'. Once you are there, navigate through the tabs at the top to get to the 'Hardware' tab. Click on 'Device Manager', and then look and see if you have anything that stands out. Namely, items that have yellow exclamation points, or anything else.

If the Optical Drive is detected, but not functioning, then it will show up there. If it is not detected then let us know.
