DVD burner won't recognize DVDs

The other day I went to put a DVD in to my DVD burner to watch a movie, and it would not recognize any data on the disc. I've tried multiple DVDs and always the same result. I also get Power errors when burning DVDs.

However, the drive can still read and burn CDs and CD-Rs just fine. Does anyone have a suggestion of a way to rectify this situation? I've upgraded the firmware on the drive and still get the same problems. Would having corrupted ASPI install cause this? I was under the impression that windows XP was able to function without it.

Can you try it in a different PC? If so, try that, to see if it is a software problem or bad drive.

Also, try burning with XP's integrated burning software (Roxio?). If you use that, try Nero, RecordNow, or NTI, which should all have different ASPI layers in/with them.

Well its actually not even an issue with burning flat out. It will not recognize data DVDs, movie DVDs... burned or origional, not even blank media. I have tried multiple media types as well. It won't even show it as if there is a Disc in the drive.

I was trying to figure o ut if I had corrupted some form of controller... I re-downloaded decoders, changed software, de and re-installed ASPI. Removed the device and reinstalled it. The next thing to try, I suppose... is plopping it into another computer.

Had the same prob with a Plextor drive. Had to replace the drive.

If I remember right, there was a drive test I had to run on Plextor's web-site. Don't know if Lite-On has a test or not.

Most likely it's going bad. I had a similar problem on a Teac drive. I replaced it with one from I/O Magic and everything's fine now.
