I hafta go with Pioneer myself because it is the quietest I have used.

If Samsung makes one it would be worth a look as well.
(I have a Sammy DVDRom that is as quiet as my Pioneers)

I just hate the really loud spin-up that some brands of optical drives make. (ahem... LiteOn )

Its quiet when burning although 16x speeds should be quiet anyway compared to any 52x cd burner.
Its noisy when I use it to read/install cds or play dvds. Latest bslb firmware installed.

Crashes Nero recode
Incompatible on primary IDE channel (possible k8t800pro problem)

I love my 1640. Never had a problem with it crashing Recode. Not sure about the IDE channel issue, since it's always been on my secondary channel as master.

It would not post on the primary ide channel even with all other drives and cdroms unplugged. Changing the jumper to master/slave/cs didn't help.

My unit was made in China. The Malay ones might be different or I just got a bad batch.

My Toshiba SD - 5372 is kickass. It works great with A120 and backs up everything I've thrown at it. With the newest firmware, this is one of the faster burners out there too.

I agree with most the choices, maybe it would be good to get one mentioned positive here and that comes with Nero software. Nero rocks.

I am in the market of one as well. Reading here about the BenQ DW1640 16X DVD+/-RW Drive i found it at eWiz for $38.50 + shipping.
Check the reviews at Newegg, no need to go for anyother burner.

I have look all over for the Pioneer DVR-110 and cannot find it so I'm asuming it's not available here in the US and only the 110D can be had.I am pleased with the Pineer Burners I've had over the years...LG(4163B?) makes a nice one with DVDRAM capabilities...Plextors 740a and BenQ's 1640 is one in the same where as the Plextor 716A and their new Slot Load Burner is 1 in the same...I have the 716A in route and am hoping the quality control in China is as good when they were manu'd in Japan.
I noticed there's a new Firmware out for the Plextor 716A

I thought the only difference between DVR-110 and 110D was, one was OEM and the other retail. I might be wrong...

The 110 supports DVDRAM 5X write which I am most interested in while the 110D only reads DVDRAM...I believe there is a review on both Models over @ CDFreaks

Correct. I don't know about in N.America but in Asia, DVR-110 (DVR-A110 is the model no. in Asia) is actually sold as an OEM model. The retail model is A10X(A,B,C depending on the color). A10X looks really nice but carries a high premium over its OEM model (about $25 more which is 50% of the OEM price!). Also, Benq has 1650 out now. It's about the same price as 1640 w/ redesigned faceplate. The specs look very similar. I need to get another dvd-writer so I need to decide among DVR-110, Benq DW-1650 and LG GSA-4167B. All about the same price.

Im in the field for a new DVD burner. I know this post has been up and down a few times so just thought Id post a few questions here since i seen it. Id like to stay at $60.00 for one, what is this 5X DVD-RAM stuff and the advantages? Are most DVD burners now duel layer? What percent takes advange of the duel layer now? I have a old pioneer burner I think its 2X and is starting to act up so trying to find the best bang for the buck. As you can see Im a little behind on the new burners. Id apperciate any info on a good dvd burner in my price range. Thanks Guys!

Any thoughts on the burners below? Pros/Cons you pick. I checked on the LG Beige IDE DVD Burner 5X DVD-RAM Write Model GSA-4167B BG - OEM like someone suggested above however is out of stock at newegg.

I've read so many reviews my head feels like it's about to explode. Seems no one can make a DVD burner that just works.

Considering:
NEC 3550A
Lite-On 165P6S
Sony DRU-810A
LG GSA-4167B

All come with nero, all black bezel.

Question:
How much does bitsetting actually matter?

Speed not being the primary concern. I'm looking for maximum compatibility.

What is it that doesn't work on those?

I'd get the Lite-On, but CD ripping quality is my primary concern with opticals.

NEC: no bitsetting on + media
Lite-On: None I can find, but I can't find a review for that specific drive
Sony: Won't always write at full speed
LG: Won't bitset all media

Which is why I wonder how important bitsetting actually is.
