I use my external USB 2.0 Lite-On 1633SX for virtually everything, digital photo storage, backing up all my important data files etc.. and I can also use it on both my computers being it`s USB.

Price of good quality DVD media is very cheap now,so that`s another reason to buy and use one .

Hi ----
Need some information on CD/DVD Burning.

Iam using a SONY DRU-710A (Dual Layer DVD Bruner). with NERO 6 on Win XP.

The burning process fails after 95%- 96% and throws up an error "INVALID BLOCK ADDRESS".

Can someone tell me if this is a Software (NERO) problem or Hardware problem or is it a disc (media) problem. I am using Moser baser blank CD's.....

Pls advice...

aj

frozencoffee, you should of started a new thread ,anyway I would try a different media for burning,Ritek & Prodisc media I find very good for both price and quality, also might be worth updating your firmware on your Sony drive.

Try downloding latest updates for Nero as well, one of the above should fix your problem.

Firmware link.

I got along for years with a CD/RW burner - primarily for archiving and disseminmating digital photos. Now that camera images are 8 MP+ and average about 4+ MB each, I found my last photo excursion would require 9 CDR disks! That moved me to DVD, and as image resolution continues to go up, I can see moving someday to a dual layer DVD burner - but only if and when the media becomes available in stores at a reasonable price.

You can only get an exact duplicate if you either A. have DVDXCOPY and it makes 2 DVD5's, or you have a dual layer burner, and dual layer media to fit the entire DVD onto a -/+R disc.

Or if the actual movie itself will fit onto a single DVDR and you cut out things like special features, extra audio tracks, menus, etc.

That is true, I have seen 1 or 2 movies that fit entirely onto a DVD5

I've seen quite a few movies that fit on a single DVD5. It mostly depends if theirs special features. If its just the movie, MOST of the time itll fit on a DVD5. special features kill it (and DTS 5.1 or LPCM audio).

I've never used the dual layer discs; $10 a disc would be too expensive even if they were rewritable. When a DVD with a movie already on it can be bought cheaper than a blank disc....well, that doesn't do it for me.

The best thing that can ever happen to DVDs is mainstream adoption of DVDAudio (especially for cars).
That would be excellent. Especially if they had dual layer DVDAudio. 8.5GB of music...and to my knowledge, AC3 audio's compression vs quality is pretty good; the TV shows I recompress are done so with AC3, 256kbps, and it sounds just fine. Drop that down to 160kbps (car stereo system, plus background noise - won't need optimal quality music anyway), and that's a helluva lot of music on one disc.

how are you recompressing into ac3

How well do these drives work for heavy gaming? It looks like with their read times they would kick @ss, but only someone who has really used them would know for sure. I need to start backing up my son's Disney movies since we have already gone through a couple of them.

I use mine all the time.

I backup movies for my 2.5 year old so they will work after 2 weeks.
I also record Barney, Wiggles, History Channel shows and burn them to DVD. Barney and Wiggles are for the aforementioned 2.5 year old. History Channel for me.
I need to backup my HD really bad. I have almost an entire DVD of pics of my 2.5 year old and will only grow larger since I bought the Digital Rebel. I can't help it if she is so photogenic!

Anyways, buy one and you will use it. Don't buy one and you will definitely never use it.

Except that, at least according to some recent studies, the burned discs may actually last longer than the (mostly cheaply-made) original pressed discs.

I actually would advocate backing-up your originals, and only watching the copies, and perhaps squirrel away a second "master" backup copy too, in case the original gets destroyed. My purchased copy of Akira on DVD already has a small "spot" on the disc, if you hold it at an angle to the light, where it appears to be partially de-laminating. (I probably should sell that one, and re-buy the SE version with the second disc. Should have bought the SE version originally.) I've also had some original CDs damaged when used in the car, I no longer use original CDs in the car. If you have kids, letting them use the backups instead of the originals may be a good idea too.

Dave is right about the time investment, although newer 16X burners/readers and current machines make that mostly a non-issue these days, you can always start the rip or burn in the background while doing other things.

Now if you have a pile of family movies on tape, or have masses of data files to back up, then a DVD burner makes sense.
I honestly can't really imagine doing Ghost backups any other way, now. I used to have to use a stack of 12-14 CD-Rs each time, now it's two DVDs, and maybe an additional CD-R.

The alternative is backing-up to another HD, but that involves mechanically installing/removing a HD, or using an external HD enclosure, and drives tend to not last as long when used in those things. Backup onto optical media seems to be a longer-lasting solution, and possibly legally-required, if you happen to have a home business that deals with some of those job sectors that require permanent archival storage of certain data.

A DVD burner should be more-or-less standard equipment these days, almost like a Zip drive was back in the day too.

You need to visit doom9.org or mrbass.org, DVDXCOPY is actually pretty poor software. I know someone that paid money for it, expecting to be able to backup their movie discs, and it didn't even work with their drive. DVDDecrypter/DVDShrink/DVDFab are free, and work better. Don't buy into the deceased-software's hype.

At least half of the people here are mentioning that they use their DVD Burner for backups of data. My question is how long can you be sure that your data backup will still be good?

I know that when CD's first came out the longevity wasn't what was expected, and it's that knowledge that prevents me from using Optical Drives as backup mediums.

Are common media like Memorex and FujiFilm ok?

I can't agree more. DVD Shrink has always worked flawlessly for me. I never understood what the DVDXCOPY fuss was all about.

What I've always found funny is that the Aqua Teen Hunger Force first season DVDs were released on two DVD-5 discs instead of a single DVD-9, which made the discs super easy to copy and share among friends. Their second season was released on a pair of DVD-9 discs, and it went on to become one of the few TV shows I've seen stay on the top ten of the DVD sales chart for several weeks. It makes me wonder if they purposefully made the first season DVDs easy to copy in order to build an audience for the show, and thus grow the market for the later sets.
