For a drive with lightscribe, I'd look at the BenQ

I don't follow lightscribe, but BenQ makes one of the best DVD burners, I don't see why their lightscribe model would be any different. I think NEC is supposed to have a drive with Lableflash to compete with Lighscribe, but I don't know anything about it.

Just pick up a DVD burner now. For about $50, it isn't a huge investment. It will still be awhile before you see HD DVD or Blu Ray burners, and when you do, they won't be cheap (and don't forget the cost of new discs). Even if you could get one at a reasonable cost in 6 months (which won't happen), $50 today on a DVD RW wouldn't be a loss.

Since this will be your first DVD burner, I'll give you a heads up on media. Unlike CD-R's, you should be careful what you pick up. Video Help is a good place to check what media is used by various brands. The best media is TY and MCC. Keep your eye on staples to have Fuji DVD's on sale, these are a good bet for TY media (check if made in Japan). Also, watch OfficeMax to have a sale on Verbatim, these are MCC discs.

BenQ is the way to go because their drives use Bitsetting. That means, you can purchase DVD+Rs and they will burn as DVD-ROMs. Your dvd players will never know the difference. They will think you are inserting a commercial DVD-ROM even though you burned it on a DVD+R disc. This takes away all the worrying about format compatibility. I'm not sure if other manufacturers support bitsetting. I recommend the BenQ 1655.

Based on your requirements, i'd very easily recommend the BenQ DW1655. If you didn't want LightScribe, i would have recommended the DW1650.

Yes, the 1620, 1640, 1650, and 1655 all have bitsetting. It is usually turned on by default. So if you use Nero, it will automatically burn your DVD+R discs as DVD-ROMs. I've never exerpienced a coaster. I use Ridata 16x 4.7GB discs from Newegg and have burned over 200 discs without any problems.
