DVD capturing

You need something with Video In. That card you linked only has Video Out. You can get TV tuners with coax and svideo in for like $20. In general, the more you spend the better the quality. Your card will most likely come with some software to do the capture. I guess what I'm saying is, depending on reasons you want to do this will determine the solutions I suggest.

If all you want to do is watch TV, or capture the occasional show, then any $20 TV card will do.

EDIT: Just noticed the title. If you want to capture video from DVDs then you are most likely out of luck as there is protection on the DVD to prevent this. What you need to do is put the DVD in your PC then use something like DVD Decrypter to copy the movie and strip out the copy protection. Then you can burn it back to a disc or reencode it to some other format.

I just noticed the topic too! I seemed to have mistitled it. what I want to do is record tv to my computer (so basically I want a cheaper version of TIVO). I already have the card and it was an OEM version and it did not come with any software, so would I have to purchase software along with a video capture card?

Thank You

Yes, you do need additional software to actually record the TV, but most cards come bundled with some software. I've tried a few different software packages, and the solution I like the best is Windows Media Center. You can probably get a nice tuner card, and the MCE remote + software bundle for under $200. The best single tuner cards out right now are the ATI Theater 550 based cards for about $70. Buy one of the non-ATI branded cards; they're identical to the ATI branded card but cost half as much.

So if I get a tv tuner card, I can just plug the coaxial cable into it and I will be able to watch and record TV on my Computer Monitor. Are there any other connections required. And what do I plug into the S-video port? Also, what other cards would you recommend buying, besides the ATI?

another nice alternative is the haupaugge pvr150... you can get the oem card from amazon for about $65 although sometimes cc has the retail version (comes with remote) for $60 after mail in rebates. as for software windows media center is very nice to use, but at over $100 is expensive and does require you to reinstall your os. another popular program is myth tv. it requires a little bit of effort to get acquainted to it, but it's quite nice once you learn the ropes (and it's free).

and to answer your other ?s... yes you just hook the coax directly to the card, install some software and you're watching/recording tv on your computer monitor. also, these cards typically don't have an svideo in, but rather a composite/rca jack so you can hook up a video camera/game console/etc and watch that on your monitor as well

Please just buy a DVD recorder for aroun $100 as you will be much happier with that than a video capture card.

Its much easier too. Push the record button.

You can then take that disc and using a program like TMPEG edit it on your PC.

MUCH MUCH easier and with less headaches.

Go with the Hauppauge PVR 150 and SageTV. If you want something like Tivo, this is a good solution. Should run about $120 or less.
