Saw this on TB:

J and R has an Alera DVD/CD Shredder for $34.88.

This is pretty amazing if it works "as advertised":

2 Seconds per CDROM!

Up until now I've just used my microwave but that that takes 4 seconds.

Any idea if shredding is better than microwaving?

I agree with FrugalGuy,
The microwave has great mysterious powers...
creates the nice aroma of plastic

Question for the peanut gallery: what happens if you feed a CD into a decent cross-cut shredder? I've got one that I think has the power to do the job, but would prefer not to ruin it until I at least get information from reliable sources such as some random poster on the 'net

Thats just sad. I guess its a hot deal if you are really paranoid about your old porn archives getting picked up by the garbage man!!!

Costco sells a paper shredder with a separate dvd/cd slot. I think a regular paper shredder would get messed up by a cd. My paper shredder can't even take 5 sheets of paper at once.

Didn't any of you hear about the wonderful invention called a "microwave over"? You should be able to do 10 CD/DVD's in about 4 seconds with that.

No, you need the 1.6 spec to fully complete the procedure. G.E. has such a model out at the current moment. Price = $399.99.

I stuck 50 CDs up and drill a hole through. Works for me.

Now going to try the Microwave oven.

Can't you just use your hands? I remember a couple years back when I tried to crack a cd by bending it, it just folded in half. However, recently I've noticed that cds crack or shatter when treated badly.

what the hell is the purpose of this? the cd will be unreadable if you just cut them in half.

but with hard disks, i throw em in the fire. it's fun to watch, too.

If they ever have anything important or I get bored, I just scratch em with a knife...

I thought that if you scratch the top and go through the reflective material that the CD-ROM cannot be read since the laser will pass through the disc. The laser reads the "pits" in the reflective material doesn't it?
